Backup Solutions

Backup2Disk or Backup to Tape.  We have around 250 gigs of data that we write to tape (FULL!) Backup every night.  I am new on board and going to implement a new system.  We have a Quantum SDLT drive with DLT tapes.  Should i upgrade to the superDLT tapes?  I was thinking on setting up backup2disk and then backup to tape from the disk.  I am open to suggestions and types of euipment needed.  Probably going to go to incremently and just a weekly full.  Not sure about why they run a daily full everyday.

Thanks,

I'll try to post back more specifically to your question later, but perhaps this will help you ask other questions - I have a comment on backup I turned into a web page because it got rather long... check out:

Another note is that we run the full  Veritas backup comprised of 15 different servers and most of them backing up entire hardisk.  Would this be a nightmare to restore this way?  I am guessing so.
Would I want to maybe run ntbackup to disk then run veritas to tape just to cover my @$$
If you don't mind tinkering I would suggest NASBackup for D2D backup.  If you are going to upgrade tape why not go to LTO3?
Backup Exec supports Disk to Disk to tape (D2D2T), there's no reason to use ntbackup to disk and then Backup Exec to tape or are you thinking of using ntbackup to a shared UNC path to save buying remote agents?
I was more or less going for if my veritas backups were corrupted I would have something to go off

So the best solution would be a backup 2 NAS then backup that data to tape?  Would you want a nightly backup to tape or weekly if you are doing both.  With 300+ gigs should i start doing daily differentials and a weekly full?  Thanks for your help.
In my opinion the best option for you is to backup either to NAS or to FTP server.

No, copy (with BE) the disk based backup rather than backing it up again, then it's just 1 stage to restore from tape rather than two steps. Think of it like not zipping up a zip file.
andy-  Thanks for your help.  So if I went with a disk backup what do you recommend for the offsite backup.  Should we run a separate job in veritas straight from server to tape or use the tape to backup the backup to disk.  I was thinking (depending on the speed and space) doing nightly differentials to disk and weekly full to disk then on the weekend running a separate backup to disk.  Does this sound good?
