Question

Not enough server storage space available to process this command

Asked by: NewAS

I am experiencing a massive issue with our Microsoft Windows 20003 Standard Edition server. It first started with our Veritas 10.0 Software, with error messages like:

AOFO: Initialization failure on: "\\SERVERNAME\Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider reports "Out of memory".

I seeked a patch from Microsoft, WindowsServer2003-KB887827-v3-x86-enu which was supposed to address this issue, but would not install.

Since this issue we are getting the following error when trying to simply map drives to or carry out simple tasks on the server:

Not enough server storage space available to process this command.

I have tried modifying the registry with the following:

Edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management and set PagedPoolSize to 0

Edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters and set IPStackSize to 11

Edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters and clear non essential entried from NullSessionPipes, trouble with this is I don't know which ones I can remove, the entries are as follows:

COMNAP
COMNODE
SQL\QUERY
SPOOLSS
netlogon
lsarpc
samr
browser

Additional to this I have noticed that I am getting the error "Not enough server storage space available to process this command" across all servers when trying to simply attach to a shared folder on a PC which is part of the same domain.

I have tried rebooting all servers and all latest microsoft updates have been applied across all servers.

All our servers are Windows 2003, we have 2 x Standard Edition and Standard Edition R2.

Any help with this woud be much appreciated.

Regards, NewAs.

I thought this problem was local to the backup server, so am trying a process of elimination. I have just closed all servers down and rebooted the server which is the main domain controller, which is a different server to the one which I thought was experiencing the problems.

This server is suffering the same problems as the other server. I have been going through the event log and looking at some errors but the Help and Support service is not running, and just checked and it seems to be missing which is a bit of a worry.

I am running sfc /scannow to re-install any missing files and start at the beginning.

Any help would still be appreciated if anyone knows what is causing my nightmare.

Regards, NewAS.

As far as the veritas issue can you post the results of this command here on the backup server?

I had a similar situation and my problem was My Mcafee Virus Scan Enterprise version 8.0i, which happens to have a memory leak under windows 2003 server. are you running virus scan on these servers by any chance?
if you are there is a patch available to fix this issue but you have to have a grant # to download it from mcafee. i updates to version 8.5 and so far so good.

I use Symantec AntiVirus, but I've been running that 4 months but not an issue.

Got the Help and Support back just using the sfc /scannow, but the "Not enough server storage...." issue is still there.

I can logon to the network, get my folder redirection, my documents, etc... internet, email, but cannot attach to any shared folders on one specific data server, however if I use remote desktops to connect to the server I can copy from to other pcs or servers that have shared folders.

Regards, NewAS.

Hi, I have the same type of setup Windows 2003 Storage Edition with 2 cluster nodes and Mcafee 8.0. I am facing the similar kind of issue. All the network drives were disconnected automatically with the error "Not enough Server Storage is available...".  Any help is greatly appriciated.

The default value for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters\IRPStackSize is 15 on Server 2003 or XP. I've had some issues with specific machines running Symantec AV software getting this error, along with Event ID 2011. Adjusting IRPStackSize (not IPStackSize as mentioned above and noting carefully the capitalization) to 25 and restarting the Server service on the machine hosting the shares has allowed me immediate access to the shares in question.

you misspelled the registry key, its IRP not IPstacksize
