Backup Exec not using assigned media

Hi,

I have recently made changes to how our backup is configured. We have Backup Exec running on a HP LTO Ultrium3 8 tape Autoloader.

I knew my main file backup was going to use just over 3 tapes and I also had scheduled as a separate task an online backup of our exchange Information Store (all using Remote Agent).

I put in 4 tapes and added them to the "Main Backup" media set and they were all set as overwritable. I then also added a single tape for our exchange backup (this is only about 40Gb). So piss my tape sets were:

1 - Full Backup Tape 1 - Main Set
2 - Full Backup Tape 2 - Main Set
3 - Full Backup Tape 3 - Main Set
4 - Full Backup Tape 4 - Main Set
1 - Exchange Backup Tape 1 - Exchange Set

There is a delay between the completion of the main backup and the start of the exchange backup of about 12 hours. During this period I logged into the system to find that for the main backup the system had used tapes 1, 2, 4 AND the Exchange Backup tape.

It not only arbitrarily skipped one of the assigned MAIN media set tapes but actually MOVED ALL BY ITSELF the tape assigned to the Exchange media set over to the MAIN media set and used that.

To complete the job I manually moved the unused "3 - Full Backup Tape 3 - Main Set" over to the Exchange media set so that the Exchange backup would complete.

Can anyone explain how and why this happened and what I can do to stop it happening in the future. Can I 'lock' tapes so the system can't move them out of the Media sets I have so very carefully planned and put them into?

Thanks in advance!

Ben
