Question

Cannot backup 2003 Exchange mailboxes; "Logon account "name" failed to access \\server\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes". Access is denied

Asked by: chitchcock

For some reason, I have a logon failure when attempting to set up a backup job for our new exchange 2003 server.  I installed the remote agent and rebooted the target machine no problem, but when I go to create the job, when I click the folder "Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes" I get a prompt for the proper credentials and a message "Logon account""""failed to access "\\server\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes".  Access is denied.  I tried to create a new backupexecmail user with full privileges including a member of the administrators, domain admins, exchange domain servers and exchange enterprise servers groups and even added the new backupexecmail user to the local administrators group with no luck.
I also granted permissions for the backup exec service to run as the new user instead of the system account from the new exchange box

First Questions, what is the the type of Backup you are trying to do?
Normal Online Vackup of the databases ot Brick Lvel (Indivisula Mailbox) Backup for all users?

If its a normail Online Backup of the databases, try to run the NTBACKup locally on the server and see if that works,

If its a bricklevel backup then you expilicitly need to give Send and ans Receive as rights for this user aacount used for the backup purpose on the mailbox store or on the server, whatever way you pereffer. This permission is not given for Exchnage Full Admiistrator as well. I would recommend a new user acount without domain admins membership as the Domain admins get Deny by default for these permissions

This account is a custom account I created to mirror the permissions of the actual backupexec user account.  I took your advise and removed it from the domain admins group and ensured it had send as and receive as for the domain and still no luck

Please disregard. I discovered the problem.  I was attempting to create the job while logged in as the administrator.  You have to log in as the backupexec user.  For some reason, administrator doesn't work.  Thanks
