Browse All TopicsHi All,
We use veritas backup exec 10D and have noticed a decline in average backup rate, but can see no real reason why, especially given the hardware we have.
We are getting 300MB average even though a year ago it was 700+ and now we actually have less data and better servers.
Backup of data on the backup server is in excess of 2000MB a min, so its not the drive or scsi card
Setup
Veritas 10D on server 2003 sp2 connected to LTO 200/400 via LSI SCSI
Servers are different generations of DL380, all with teamed 1GB NIC's
All Servers connected with 3Com 5500EI Gigabit Switch, Jumbo Frames Enabled on Swith & Servers
During backup the CPU's & NICs are not maxed out
Any ideas, our backup is running out of time,
Thanks

Hi Richard de groot, in answer to your questions
1) I can really turn off verification as we need to know it has worked
2) Local backup is 2000MB throughput, so its not the drive or scsi
3) Sophos is installed on the machine but we never have on access scanning on servers, only weekly
4) We dont have enough space to proxy copy backups
5) Refer to answer 2
6) Refer to answer 2
7) Will look into this
8) Disks are defragged weekly

Hi, there
things to notice there is a SP4 for Backup Exec 10d is this by the way the build 5629 that is the one you should use.
also the backup's that you are running I then assume the slow backup are from remote clients
is there System state backup's involved in this.
Check Space rule 80/20 so that means if you re having a System state being backup then on that System state you will need at least 20% free space of the C:\ drive otherwise you will see that the backup is going very slow on the transfer rate as well.
Also check the VSS Rollupdate Microsoft kb940349 install on all Windows 2003 Servers including the Backup Exec server.

Are you already aware if the theoratically maximum tape drive speed is meeting the speed in practice? If yes, then you can consider trying the following:
1. Remove verification (if it is on);
2. Try a cleaning tape;
3. Check if your virusscanner is scanning data during backup;
4. You can configure BE first of all to copy all over to the c or d drive. During the day you can backup these files;
5. Maybe you can update the SCSI drivers. This can be a huge difference in data throughput;
6. Check connections to the scsi card;
7. Look in the logs for problems;
8. Did you try to defrag the disk or the .edb files of Exchange?
9. Tried another SCSI card with larger datathroughput.
10. Are you using W2003 R2? Could conflict with 10d :-( Especially the remote agent.
Hope this helps.
Richard
If al this is done and no change in datathroughput? You can consider a new server with fast disks or a faster tapestreamer. How much data do you want to backup and what is your backup windows at night?
