i have backup exec 11d installed on a server running 2003 small business server. i have added an external network harddrive (hp media vault 1tb) and would like to backup any data that is stored in it. on backup exec i have the license for remote agent for windows, small business and netware servers. each time i try to add the media vault via the remote agent install i get prompted for a username and password when i enter it i get the following error
attempting to connect to server \\hpmediavault failed with the following error: The accoutn name and/or password supplied is not vaild. Please reenter the login information and try again.

got it working finally after being on the phone with ymantec for 3 hours. had ot change the backup exec default login as well as recreate a new login for the hp media vault. but its excatly like you said it will backup the data each backup completes with an exection that says missing remote agent which is fine by me, as long as it backups up the data.

Remote Agents can only be installed on a MS Windows OS.
If the HP Media Vault is not running Microsoft Windows, you won't be able to install the remote agent.
You can try to present a share from the NAS and then connect Backup Exec to that share. You will always get an error about a missing Remote Agent, but probably the files will be backed up. Don't expect advanced features such as differential backups through archive bit though.
