The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How does Dell's RD1000 Perform in Real Life

Asked by MrChip2 in Backup Exec, Hard Drives & Storage, Removable Backup Media

This question is for Orci (and anyone else who has experience using the RD1000).

Hi,

I am looking for a new backup solution for my server.   I am thinking about the RD1000 and would like to hear how the drive is actually working for people who have been using it for a while.  I have a new Dell R300 1U rackmount server that is currently being backed up on a NAS drive.  I am looking for either a tape or RDD solution where I can set up media rotation and store backups offsite.  Here is a profile of my server:

The new server has two 750GB drives mirrored.  These drives are split into four partitions:

1. OS partition - 30GB of which 12 GB are used
2. Current Work Files - 36GB of which 8 GB are used.  These files change daily and need to be backed up daily.
3. Archived work files - 75 GB capacity of which 15 GB are used.  These files change rarely and can be backed up once a week (or even less frequently).
4. Multimedia files - 600GB capacity of which 100GB are used.  These are mostly personal photos.  I am adding maybe 2-4 GB of photos a month.  The rest do not change.

If you currently use the RD1000, do you recommend it for the above situation?  How has it worked for you?

My 1U server will not accommodate the internal solution (in hindsight I should have gone with a 2U server).  So I am looking at the external box.  UNLESS, I install the drive on my desktop computer and backup the server over the network.  I do have a GB network (GB switch and NICs).  Would you suggest the external drive connected directly to my server via USB or an internal drive on my desktop that backs up the server over the LAN?

The second solution would be PowerVault tape drive 100T DAT72 Tape Drive.  This drive would be backwards compatible with my DDS4 tapes.  The tapes are much smaller with only a 36GB native capacity.
