Question

Why do I get the error "The path on the media server for staging temporary restore data when restoring individual items from tape ran out of disk space"?

Asked by: fnillc

I'm trying to restore a single individual Exchange 2003 SP2 mailbox, directly from tape. The Exchange backup was successful, the catalog job was successful. I've inserted the tape, created a new Restore job (not using the wizard), and when I try to restore a single mailbox, it fails after 50 seconds and gives this error:

"Final error: 0xe000848f - Insufficient disk space.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33935

Restore- \\TFHEXCH\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group V-79-57344-33935 - The path on the media server for staging temporary restore data when restoring individual items from tape ran out of disk space. Either clear some disk space, or click Tools/Options/Restore and enter a path that has more disk space."

I am using D:\TEMP, and the D:\ drive has 69.1GB of free space. The entire mdbdata folder is on the same drive, and is 39GB total. The Byte Count on the backup job for this tape is at just under 42GB.

So it would seem that 69GB of free space is sufficient to restore a mailbox from a 42GB store. (The mailbox itself is 2GB, but I know BE needs more space than that).

I tried a Mapped Network Drive (N:\) that has 270GB of free space, and I got the same error message as above. The folder I am setting to D:\TEMP is "Path on Exchange Server for temporary storage of log and patch files."

I've checked the Veritas/SEER/Symantec knowledge base and it just says to use a folder on a drive with more free space. Is there any way to check how much free space it needs? Is free space the issue here??

I also tried redirecting the mailbox restore to a different, newly created mailbox (same error message resulted). I also tried deleting and purging the mailbox in question from Exchange, then checking the "Automatically recreate user accounts and mailboxes" in the "Microsoft Exchange" section of the restore job properties (got the same error message).

Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

You don't specify the version, but Backup Exec won't use network drives for restores.
There are two places it need space: one on the backup Exec server, and on the Exchange server. I think you need twice the store size plus some.

You've specified the path in the wrong location. "Path on Exchange Server for temporary storage of log and patch files." is only used for an Information Store restore.

Instead, you need to set the path in Tools/Options/Restore. See http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/286084.htm.

Then recreate your restore job from scratch and try again.

I could not find a solution.  I called Symantec and they said to Duplicate the Set to a Backup-To-Disk folder, then run a Restore job from the Backup-to-Disk folder.

(I did specify the BE version in the Tags... 11d rev. 7170).
