If the server is older, I've also seen a badly fragmented hard drive slow backups way down to a crawl so check this as well.

How can I increase the speed of the backup to an Iomega Rev drive
We have 2 Iomega Rev drives - a 35GB and a 120 GB. Both are USB 2 connected to a windows 2003 standard server r2 sp2.
Backup exec 12 is our backup program. The transmission rate to the Iomega varies from 29 MB/min to 60 MB/min. It doesn't matter if it is a full backup, incremental, an ad hoc document directory, etc. It is slow. Occasionally, it will fun 350 MB/Min - something around there is about what I expect.
How can we increase our speed - our full backup is taking 8-10 hours sometimes, then on a good dat 2.5 hours (fast transfer speed).

It appears to be a lot faster not using Symantec Backup Exec so I'd just either call them or check their support site for someone else who might have had an issue with the same problem.
There is some setting in Backup Exec that is slowing it down so they are the best people to ask about this.
Not fammiliar with those backup drives, but a comman issue that Backup exec has had is with using the drivers from the backup hardware manufacturer or with the drivers built into Backup Exec.
You can try using one of the other to see what result you get.
At least you know it's not a hardware issue since data transfer copying directly works fine.

Is the USB port on the server USB2?
Even on some newer hardware, not all ports run at high speed.
If you can do a straight file copy from hard drive to USB drive, are the speeds the normal USB2 speed, or are they still slow? Have you tried connecting the USB2 drives to different ports on the server?
If everything works at normal USB2 speeds outside of BackupExec, then contact BackupExec support( you probably paid for this support already) and ask them if they are aware of this issue and if they can help you find out why BackupExec is transferring data so slowly to these drives.
