The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Really Hard Question - Backup Dead Server and Restore to VMWARE WORKSTATION 6

Asked by manav08 in Backup Exec, Windows 2003 Server, VMware

Tags: Windows 2003 Server, Acronis, Symantec Backup Exec, RAID Failure

Hi Guys,

The reason this question has 800 points is because it is really tough. Okay Lets start -

Problem Scenario -

One of the IT Companies who contract us from time to time have had their server die. Upon closer inspection by our hardware specialist their motherboard has died. Since it is a 4 year old Custom built Server the parts are no longer available.
To top it all up the customer hasn't been doing any Backups for 4 months because unaware to him the receptionist had been lazy to change the USB Backup HDD.

Server Description -
2 Hard Drives in a RAID 1 array.
RAID Card - Adaptec 2410SA

Desired Resolution -

According to me the best Resolution at this point in time would be
1. Take the snapshot of the connected DISK using Symantec BAckup Exec 12.5 or Acronis True Image Echo Server 9
2. Convert the image into a .vmdk file and load it into a virtual machine
3. I heard this is possible to do using SYMANTEC BACKUP EXEC., I need to know HOW??

Help Required -

1 . As stated above in the resolution I would like the exact procedure on how to do this. We have both Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 and Acronis True Image Echo Server at our disposal.

2. Also I would need some help in understanding how to perform the above operation if it was RAID 5 with 4 drives . Instead of RAID 1 with 2 drives.
