In a nutshell, I need the Windows shares we created on our NS120 to get backed up to our tape drive that is connected to the Backup Exec server.
After searching throughout the internet, Symantec, EMC, and Experts Exchange, I'm still nowhere with trying to backup CIFS (NTFS) file shares on our NS120 to our Backup Exec server.
NS120, configured with NDMP, MD5. We do not have the NS120 hooked up directly to a tape drive, we want the Backup Exec server to handle that.
The few times I've been able to connect to the NS120 from BUE, the job fails. Usually it's a "Lost connection to server" error after 10 - 15 minutes. Once I receive that error, I cannot connect to the NS120 through Backup Exec. I can still browse the shares from Windows Explorer. It either takes a pre-set amount of time, or a complete reboot of the Backup Exec server to see the shares again in BUE.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. EMC blames Symantec and Symantec blames EMC.

Forget the CIFS - you have to blow the CIFS share away. Create a new iSCSI FS then create a new iSCSI LUN and point it at the iSCSI FS you just created. Assign the LUN an IP. On your windows server, you'll need the iSCSI initiator client to discover the LUN Target. Windows should then see the LUN as a new physical HDD.
That's the challenge you face... this is going to depend on much space you have. If you've got plenty, then you're off to a good start. i.e. keeping the CIFS intact, whilst being able to create a new iSCSI LUN. Then it would be a case of migrating the CIFS 'Server' to the server with the new iSCSI LUN. There are a number of tools you can use for this... a free one (that i have a lot of success with) is MS Fileserver Migration Wizard - Link below. The data would have to be contained in Shares. The FSMT is run on the TARGET server and copies Data, NTFS & Share permissions. Very handy tool & it works!

The easiest approach is to mount the NS120 shares on the backup server. Mount a NAS share on the Backup Exec server, create a backup job, then go into the backup job properties and select Network and Security under Job Defaults in the left-hand pane. Tick the box for "Enable selection of user shares"
