For the past couple days, all backup jobs have been prompting for inserting of overwritable media after job has already been running. This is after the backup has been running for several hours, and data has already been recorded on tape. It's as if the tapes are full, but in reality they are not. The size of backups has remained consistent, for both the Incremental and Full backups. I've cleaned the LTO1 tape drive (Quantum Autoloader with Seagate Ultrium 06242-xxx), tried brand new tapes (which have been using for years). Jobs will never complete as they once did. I've restarted the server, started/stopped the services.
It's like the capacity of the tapes has dropped, or the compression is not what it once was. Typically I backup 465GB of data on 3 tapes with no problem, and have been doing so for months. now it's asking to insert overwritable media. All media is overwritable, data is written to all 3 tapes, but it appears there is still space left on the tapes that is not used.
For example,
Friday's Full Backu job, utilizing 3 tapes in a 3 slot partition, which has always worked:
One tape has 0 capacity left, the 2nd has 12.9GB available capacity, 3rd has 11.3 GB available capacity.
It looks like the 1st tape is maxed out capacity, but the other 2 are written, but still have space left over.

Check the cables from the SCSI card to the Tape-drive, and make sure the system is properly terminated. Look for and clean out any dust from the tape drive. Shutdown the server, turn off the tape drive, then turn it back on, and after that turn the server back on. Make sure you have installed all BE updates and windows updates.
