Question

Restore using Backup Exec 12.5 of an Exchange 2003 mailbox

Asked by: pronetsol

Ok, I need some help just sorting through some of the weeds here - that is help me sort through the irrelevant information, and get to the heart of the issue.

Back in 2005 we did a mailbox-level backup of an Exchange 2003 server. Now we need to restore some of those mailboxes.

In 2005 we were on a domain that we'll say was called "legacydomain.internal" and now we're on a domain called "currentdomain.internal".

So, my Backup Exec 12.5 server is on currentdomain.internal, and the old Exchange server (now retired) was on legacydomain.internal. Luckily this old server was P2V'd, and backed up before being retired. So in order to bring it back into production to try to do this restore, I just had to restore IT from an old vRanger backup, along with one of the old legacydomain.internal DC's, and wham-o I effectively brought legacydomain.internal back to life, so I could take my backup tape form 2005, restore it to the original server, and the hope is that I will (once restored) take the mailboxes and Exmerge them into .PSTs, which is what the final product needs to be in this case.

So here's my problem:
The old Exchange 2003 server, when I'm trying to test the credentials for the backup selection, tests two things using a domain admin account on legacydomain.internal:
* Backup Exec connects to the old Exchange 2003 Server itself, which is successful
* Backup Exec tries to connect to the MAPI interface, which is not successful
     * Error message is the same as reported in this article: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Storage/Backup_Restore/Backup_Exec/Q_24073931.html

If I ignore the failing test, and just try to run the restore, I get (no surprise) the same error message about not being able to log into MAPI.

So, what gives? Why do the Domain Admin account credentials for legacydomain.internal work just fine for the server, but not for the MAPI interface?

*BONUS: I'm using the same Domain Admin account credentials that originally created this backup in 2005 - a service account we called "Veritas", after the old name for Backup Exec (that is, the version we were running in 2005 was called Veritas).

A few things you should check:
* Make sure you're restoring using the Logon Account LEGACYDOMAIN\Veritas
* Make sure the Logon Account LEGACYDOMAIN\Veritas still has a mailbox in Exchange 2003 and that you can successfully log in to that mailbox.
* Make sure the logon account LEGACYDOMAIN\Veritas is not hidden from the Global Address list in the old Exchange org.
* Make sure that the LEGACYDOMAIN\Veritas account has a unique mailbox (see http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/256537.htm).

I also would have thought that you didn't really need to restore the old domain and Exchange server. Have you tried a redirected restore to a mailbox in your current domain?

So, first to answer your post (thank you, btw):

* I am using legacydomain\veritas to perform the restore
* Veritas did NOT have a mailbox, so I created one, and that helped
* After creating the mailbox I confirmed that it was not hidden from the GAL
* Confirmed it does have a unique mailbox.

So after the stuff above, I'm still running into MAPI problems. A fellow technician here suggested trying to restore the entire Information Store to avoid the MAPI interface of a mailbox-level restore. So I tried that, but the backup failed after about 34 GB of data with a MAPI error.

Not to be deterred, I figured there might be 34 GB of actual good data there, so I used "eseutil /p" to repair it and was then able to mount the store (and voila I had a bunch of mailboxes again).

I then ran the mail cleanup agent, which realized that all the mailboxes were disconnected. I reattached the mailboxes to the old AD accounts on LEGACYDOMAIN, and tried to run the ExMerge.

I keep running into MAPI errors in the ExMerge log (see the code snipet). When I look up information on the (CMapiSession::GetInfoFromProfile) error, I find that it's because the mailbox in question is either (a) attached to a disabled AD account, (b) hidden from the GAL, or both (a) and (b). I've confirmed that this is not the case.

So the only thing I think I forgot to do that was recommended to me was to run an offline defrag. So, I've taken the Information Store offline, and I'm running an offline defrag as we speak.

Maybe it'll work - my concern is that I've been getting MAPI errors all along, and I don't know much about MAPI, and I don't even know how to confirm that it's workign correctly in terms of the Exchange server. It could just be that simple.

UPDATE: I thought I'd properly "allowed" the "Send as" and "Receive as" permissions - and I guess I did. But when digging into the error log noted above, I found that the LDAP error could be a permissions issue, so I checked again. Turns out that there were some inherited DENY permissions that were overriding my ALLOW permissions.

So, at this point I'm waiting for the offline defrag to finsih, I'll remount the Information Store later today, and try again.

Still no go. Removed all the "Deny" permissions, and same exact error messages. Rebooted both the LEGACY DC and Exchange server, etc.

So, the log/error messages above still apply.

Found another article here that basically says to ignore the permissions error when the server from which ExMerge is running is NOT a DC (which is the case).

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Email_Groupware/Exchange_Server/Q_21597862.html

So that takes me back to the MAPI issue. :(

Have you read http://www.outlookexchange.com/articles/JasonSherry/sherry_c4p5.asp?
It does have suggestions for the MAPI error and also lists all pre-requisites for ExMerge.

Have you checked the LegacyExchangeDN attribute in active directory, as the article suggested?

Also, have you tried the last suggestion in my original post? The one where I suggest just using the production network and doing a redirected restore of the legacy mailbox to a mailbox in the live Exchange database?
The only thing you may have to do is make sure that you have a machine on the production network with the name of the original Exchange server and a BE agent installed (this can be any workstation). See http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs./306919.htm

by: pronetsolPosted on 2009-11-25 at 11:36:43ID: 25910446

UPDATE: The issue has been resolved.

We did not try the suggestion of restoring to the Exchange server on the newer domain. The reasons are somewhat complicated, but basically come down to the fact that doing so would result in us flooding the PTP circuit between the server where the backups are restored from (in this case), and the server we'd be restoring it to. This circuit is used highly for production data throughout the day and night, pretty much 24/7, and the decision was made that doing the restore across this circuit would be a method of last resort. Basically this was an environment-specific decision - it might have worked and saved us some time.

The actual root of the problem? The accounts were hidden from the GAL - not because I forgot to un-check that box, but because something inside of AD wasn't doing its job when I unchecked the "Hide from GAL" box. Basically we had to install ADSI Edit, and manually enter the proper settings for the "showInAddressList" attribute (pretty sure that's the proper attribute) in order to get them to be visible in the GAL.

Thanks for your time anyhow. I definitely learned a ton from all the directions we went in during this whole process.
