Ok, I need some help just sorting through some of the weeds here - that is help me sort through the irrelevant information, and get to the heart of the issue.
Back in 2005 we did a mailbox-level backup of an Exchange 2003 server. Now we need to restore some of those mailboxes.
In 2005 we were on a domain that we'll say was called "legacydomain.internal" and now we're on a domain called "currentdomain.internal".
So, my Backup Exec 12.5 server is on currentdomain.internal, and the old Exchange server (now retired) was on legacydomain.internal. Luckily this old server was P2V'd, and backed up before being retired. So in order to bring it back into production to try to do this restore, I just had to restore IT from an old vRanger backup, along with one of the old legacydomain.internal DC's, and wham-o I effectively brought legacydomain.internal back to life, so I could take my backup tape form 2005, restore it to the original server, and the hope is that I will (once restored) take the mailboxes and Exmerge them into .PSTs, which is what the final product needs to be in this case.
So here's my problem:
The old Exchange 2003 server, when I'm trying to test the credentials for the backup selection, tests two things using a domain admin account on legacydomain.internal:
* Backup Exec connects to the old Exchange 2003 Server itself, which is successful
* Backup Exec tries to connect to the MAPI interface, which is not successful
* Error message is the same as reported in this article:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Storage/Backup_Restore/Backup_Exec/Q_24073931.htmlIf I ignore the failing test, and just try to run the restore, I get (no surprise) the same error message about not being able to log into MAPI.
So, what gives? Why do the Domain Admin account credentials for legacydomain.internal work just fine for the server, but not for the MAPI interface?
*BONUS: I'm using the same Domain Admin account credentials that originally created this backup in 2005 - a service account we called "Veritas", after the old name for Backup Exec (that is, the version we were running in 2005 was called Veritas).
