Question

Restoring Backup Image to a smaller LUN using Backup Exec System Recovery Server Edition.

Asked by: jjoz

Hi All,

I'd like to perform migration of my current physical Exchange Server 2007 from RAID-5 LUN into a server with fewer Hard Disk drive in RAID-1

is there anything that i should be paying attention into ?

Source: 5x 400 GB with RAID 5 (total 1.5 TB)
Target: 2x 400 GB with RAID 1 (400 GB)

I've calculated that the total content of the partitions on source server is just 198 GB, therefore I am dare to move the Exchange Server into the smaller disk drive.

Previously, Ive done restoration to a bigger LUN size and it doesn't go as I expected with the unknown partition cannot be used. So is there anything that i should do before during and after this process ?

Thanks.

You can do it.
When you run the restore wizard, just make sure to check the "Resize restored drive" check-box.

by: BJLJPosted on 2009-11-17 at 19:00:29ID: 25846298

I think you should finish the restoration, right?

by: jjozPosted on 2009-11-17 at 19:01:27ID: 25846300

Not yet, it is going to be done this Saturday.

I've downloaded BESR 2010 and wondering if this new version can be worthwhile to try :-)

by: BJLJPosted on 2009-11-17 at 19:24:12ID: 25846390

Yes, it's new version and there are lots of new feture for the BESRMS.
If you are just running BESR on few computers, it's better to forget BESRMS than trying it.
But anyway, it should be same for the "Resize restored drive" check-box for you.

oh OK, yes only 2 Servers that i manage using BESR 8.5.5 now.

So in this case i shall install BESR MS on the main backup / mgmt. Server and then i can then manage both just by installing the agent not the full BESR product on each server, CMIIW ?

by: BJLJPosted on 2009-11-17 at 19:48:53ID: 25846483

Yes. If you would try Altiris, there are lots of new fetures. Altiris is like a central platform to let you manage many kind of resources.

Hi BJLJ,

I was able to restore finally after struggling with the Error Code:

Error: "V2iSR.exe - Application Error. The exception unknown software exception (0xC000417) occurred in the application at location 0x008DEE3E..." while restoring a recovery point using Symantec Recovery Disk

I found out that is due to the ESXi partitions still exist in the target server, OK I finally reconfigure the partition using 3rd party Disk partitioning tool.

But then after the restore process, my OS is infinitely restarting ?

I didn't check restore anyware (the server difference is the SCSI controller from PERC 6/i into SAS6i/r) I've also restore each partitions using "Restore Disk signature" options already and only mark the C drive partitions as boot/active ?

by: BJLJPosted on 2009-11-22 at 04:33:50ID: 25881614

You should to check restore anyware if you restore the image to another server with different HCL.
According the guide, restore original disk signature:
Select this option if either of the following situations are true:
Your computer's drive letters are atypical (for example, assigned letters other than C, D, E, and so forth).
You are restoring a recovery point to a blank hard drive.

by: jjozPosted on 2009-11-22 at 04:38:03ID: 25881632

Yes the target server was preformatted with acronis to have three partitions smaller than the original server.

Does restoring the partition in different order can ruin this process ?

by: BJLJPosted on 2009-11-22 at 21:55:05ID: 25885386

No need to do in this way.
You may refer to the chapter 10 for the part of "Restoringmultiple drives by using a systemindex file".
That should be the answer for you. :)

For 8.5, it should be chapter 14 - Recovering a computer.

5 In the View recovery points by list, select one of the following options:
System
"This type of recovery operation uses a system index file (.sv2i) to restore a computer that has multiple drives."

by: jjozPosted on 2009-11-23 at 01:09:24ID: 25886004

Hi BJLJ,
I'm using BESR 2010, and each partitions saved into a .V2i not .sv2i.
but I'll check that out anyway.

THanks for the reply

by: BJLJPosted on 2009-11-23 at 18:00:03ID: 25893302

The .sv2i file is a system index file, it's still the same mechanism in BESR 2010.

by: jjozPosted on 2009-11-30 at 13:55:41ID: 25937817

Hm I'm facing hard times now, eventhough I already create the same numbers of partitions as in the backup but with smaller size and also restore it in the same order the restored OS still in boot loop.

by: BJLJPosted on 2009-11-30 at 21:34:05ID: 25940162

Can you confirm that you checked both check-boxes in the restoration wizard?
"Restore anyware"
"Resize restored drive"

by: BJLJPosted on 2009-11-30 at 21:36:19ID: 25940171

BTW, if you have different storage or networking device in the new server, you'd better to add the driver in the customized srd iso.

OK, i"m now trying to create the SRD from the guide above as per my target server hardware and then drag n drop the Driver into the INF dir. and see how it goes from there.
