Commvault Galaxy backup error "System State backup - Failed to Backup Component RSM"

Several of my servers (at different times) give me errors when backing them up within Commvault Galaxy - "System State backup - Failed to Backup Component RSM"  I did a search and seen that RSM can be excluded, but I'm not sure what risk I might take from excluding that.

A. Is there a way I can get that to successfully back up?
B. If it's not 'worth it', what is it, and is it truly safe to exclude from my backup?

I know I need the system state JIC i need to do a bare metal restore, but I don't know what RSM is.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you have updated the CommCell to the latest patch level for 6.1 and tried uninstalling then reinstalling the iData Agent then I would recommend either logging a support call.

RSM can indeed safely be excluded from your backup. It's the tape device and media datbase used by NTBackup. Since you're probably not using NTBackup the database will have no important data.

RSM is Removable Storage Manager. I commonly got this error on macines that had no removable storage.  As I understand it, the error comes from trying to backup an empty database for RSM.
So, if you have no removable storage attached to the machine giving the error then add this key to registry on that machine and the error will stop:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CommVault Systems\Galaxy\Instance001\iDataAgent]
"SKIP_RSM_BACKUP"=dword:00000001
