Question

CommVault setup failed to get the Operating system of client

Asked by: hanrat

I'm trying to install CommVault on a DC and all goes well except that the installer returns this message immediately. Before routing was done well etc. it got a time-out of about a minute, now that i can ping this machine it returns almost immediately with this message. I'ts my guess it relies on a service that doesn't work or so.

Any ideas are welcome!

Hi,

No offence but your question makes no sense at all. What message does the installer return? What got a time-out of about a minute? What message comes back immediately now that you can ping the machine?

What is it is not working?

Hi Squify,

Thanks for your response. I tried to describe my findings; here are the answers to your questions:
1. Setup failed to get the Operating system of client [hostname].
2. Before i got the routing right it the installer couldn't contact the host and therefor got an time-out.
3. When i ping i get a normal reply. When i try to run the installer i get answer #1.
4. The (remote) install of the CommVault iDataAgent.

Ad. 1: This is while trying "Checking OS version of client [hostname]".
Ad. 2: Because the time-out now is gone, i assume it can make contact with the host.
Ad. 4: I have done this already about 20 times without problems. The difference with this machine is that it's on another VLAN.

Regads, Hans

During setup did you select the network card that is connected to the same VLAN as the CommServe? Is the client machine behind a firewall (either windows or hardware)? From the CommCell Console can you right click on the client (if it has appeared) and click All Tasks -> Check Connectivity?

You need to make sure that you can telnet to the commserve from the client on port 8400, 8402, (8600-8619) and the DNS resolution works both ways forward and reverse from both the client and the commserve/mediaagent.

Hi,

There's a hardware firewall in between that is also the router. In it's traffic log is see no traffic between the host from wich i start the installation and the target host, except for allowed icmp and microsoft-ds traffic. All traffic gets logged.

I wonder how CommVault tries to find out the OS-version. Any idea?

Regards, Hans

If you run the installation from the install media on the client it will only communicate with the commserve after you have gone through the firewall configuration wizard during installation. It detects the OS via the local registry of the client. However if any of the communication ports are being blocked by windows firewall/iptables/hardware firewall this information will not make it to the CommServe.

Problem solved. Firewall with any/any allow didn't help, in the end i had to enter the disc locally into the machine and start the setup from there --> then it worked... strange stuff this CommVault installer. Thanks for your help anyway!

It is likely that the client had Internet Enhanced Security installed. It is that option under add/remove programs - additional options. It is the "feature" that brings up the pop up box in IE everytime you try and visit a webpage that is not in your trusted zone. This causes issues like this when installing across the network

Hi, yeah, thought so too but uninstall of that wouldn't do the trick either unfortunately.
