Question

Is the upgrade from CV 7 to 8 worth it and how long should it take?

Asked by: deesloop

I have a commcell running CV 7 on storage server 2003
And a media agent on another server on a  remote site also on 2003
I have founf Commvault to be slow, prone to errors, difficult to diagnose, difficult to work with

Is version 8 any more intuitive than Version 7.
Also the company that installed 7 want to charge a whole day to upgrade
(They claim the last upgrade took 3 days)
Is this reasonable?

I am a consultant that specialises in CommVault. I can assure you that when configured correctly CV works very well and is very stable. It does however require that it is designed and configured correctly to your environment as with all backup software. Changing the version of the software is not likely to fix all your issues (depending on what they are of course). Most issues are down to client configuration or the CV configuration.

The upgrade process can be lengthy and is risky if you try and do it yourselves. I would highly recommend bringing in a consultant to handle the upgrade. The V6 to V7 upgrades were quite lengthy however the V7 to V8 upgrade is slightly better and once the CommServe has been upgraded the rest of the environment can be upgraded quite quickly. Personally I would have quoted two days for an upgrade though as the company i work for insist on comprehensive testing to ensure the environment is stable and running correctly on the new version. This of course is determined by the complexity of your environment, how many clients, clustered or not, number of devices attached to your MediaAgent.

You will enjoy the added functionality of version 8 however especially the new Dedupe which is a vast improvement on V7.

Well I'm an ex Backup Exec user.
It I found to be easy to get to grips with
Easy to upgrade (2 or 3 hours) and ran with far fewer issues.

CV ws just kinda dropped on me.
No real explanation about how it works, how to create backups.
It to me seems overly complicated and a real pain to use.

I only have a handfull of servers but CV looks to me like a product for
handling dozens of servers. Overkill for my needs.

I'm looking for a course or decent book on getting it to work.
Maybe then I'll feel more comfortable and less negative and confused about using it.

I dont know who sold you the solution but I can not comprehend why they wouldnt have sold you a training course along with it, or at least offered a day for knowledge handover. You cant be expected to just learn how to use this product as like you said it is quite advanced in the sense that it can do a lot more than Backup Exec. However once you have had a day of handover (or training) you will understand how simple it is and how everything hangs together.

If you are in the UK then the training is run out of Reading and takes 3 days. Or you can contact Glasshouse Technologies to arrange for someone like myself to come onsite to do the upgrade then spend half a day to a day teaching you how it all works and how to get the most out of it. CV can offer a lot more than Backup Exec can and although I wouldn't have recommended it for your size of environment initially now that you have it you should really persevere with it as once it is working correctly you will have worry free backups.

I went on a course and did the labs, but I just can get to grips with it.

Anway. C'est la vie.

They have offered to look after it for us at £2k per year.

The other stupid thing baout CV is the licensing
I backup to disc then to tape.
Now I've gone above 2 Tb written to disk, I have to fork out a fortune (£2k+) to write to more than 2Tb.
The more you use the more you pay? Stupid.

by: squifyPosted on 2009-06-24 at 01:44:31ID: 24699283

Would be better to invest in Deduplication and then keep only 7 days of data on disk. Also buy some Archiving licenses as that will cut down on the amount of data you need to backup.

More £££.

It's never ending with them.
