AVG scan causing backup issues with CommVault Express 7

The day we installed AVG on our f&p server, incremental backups jumped from 6gb to 50gb (the size of a full).  I spoke with Commvault, and they said that this could be caused by the AVG scan that is happening every night.

AVG is looking into the issue, but I get the feeling they dont really have an answer.

Somehow when AVG performs a full PC scan, it modifies access time on each file, and makes commvault think that it should be included in the incremental backup.  I looked at advanced properties of random files on the server, and the dates were not changed.

Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Always set CommVault to use the archive bit rather than access time. Virus software always messes with access/modified time on files during scans.

Hi,

Some anti-virus software use the NTFS 5 change journal to track when a file has been opened for backup. This changes the USN of the file and will cause the file to beincluded in the subsequent backup. Since all files are scanned/opened for a full backup this makes the subsequent incremental backup include all files - essentially turning the incremental backup into another full backup.

We had this problem before. If you go to the Backup Set Properties, change the Job Options to use the classic File Scan instead of the change journal. That should fix the problem.
