I have tried that I guess I should have said this allready. When I right click on the folder I get general,sharing customize no security to change.

Browse All TopicsI am trying to copy the users my documents folder from a laptop hard drive setup on a desktop as a slave. I have copied most of it except for the windows folder. When I get to the users my documents folder it gives my the error message cannot copy the file or folder access is denied. the disk may be write protected or may be in use. I cannot open the folder to inspect the files either. I need to copy these due to the death of the laptop. I am copying the files to a external usb hard drive.

I ended up booting into vista to be able to change ownership xp did not have the securities tab available to me. I am now copying the files. when the person who gets this usb hard drive tries to copy the files to there new laptop will they have to change the permissions and ownerships again? and thanks for all your help I should have been able to figure this on out though I am training to be mcsa cert.

Hi Begearra
What you need to do is take ownership on the folder. Right click on the folder, properties, security, advanced, owner, then change ownership to yourself and make sure that you check the box saying something like replace owner of subdirectories and objects.
