The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Drivers for Disk Image

Hello Experts,

I am attempting to build an XP image using Norton Ghost and I am wondering where I should put the drivers for all of my platforms? I am just not sure where Windows automatically looks for hardware device drivers. Right now I have them in the C:\dell\drivers folder. If there is some checklist or best practices that anyone knows of that would be great too! Thanks!

You should check out the install Tools for Windows, and how to do Sysprep with all the drives available.

I hope this helps !

configure your sysprep.inf file to handle the additional driver locations:

To configure your sysprep.ini file manually:

First create a folder on your root drive where XP will reside. ( i.e. c:\drivers)
Next create subfolders for the different drivers:
c:\dirvers\audio
c:\drivers\NIC
c:\drivers\Video
c:\drivers\chipset

etc. etc.

Now open your sysprep.ini file and edit the following:

[Unattended]
    OemSkipEula=Yes
    ExtendOemPartition=1
    OemPnPDriversPath = DRIVERS\AUDIO;DRIVERS\VIDEO;DRIVERS\NIC;DRIVERS\chipset

If you ever edit the file locations or add drivers you need to remember to edit the following registry key before resealing your image:
Remove all data EXCEPT %SystemRoot%\inf (this first section has to be left otherwise plug and play won't work correctly)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion
Value: DevicePath
Date: %SystemRoot%\inf;

mostly you just need to add the OemPnPDriversPath =    under the [Unattended] section.

I was also wondering after the machine is configured, does Norton strip its identity when it makes the image. That way when you reboot it goes through the sysprep stuff but still has all of your customizations? Thanks!

Depends on where the settings are stored. You need to make a default profile to use. Generally, the settings are stored there and sysprep does not touch them. Sysprep will also leave individual software registry hives alone.

Unfortunately the Default User Profile doesn't always help when using Sysprep, the main cause is, Sysprep has a tendancy of copying the Administrators Profile over the Default Users Profile, so what every changes you make, make them both to the Default User and Administrators Account, I've found by doing this you're fairly safe.  Also rather than create my profile as suggested in the link above, by AllKnowing1, I've found that most changes are registry, if you know the keys, then just load the Default Users hive and import the reg keys that way.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Ok, so for the drivers can I just use drivers\ or do I have to break them down like, DRIVERS\AUDIO;DRIVERS\VIDEO;DRIVERS\NIC;DRIVERS\chipset, as you listed above. I am just wondering if the .inf can look in the drivers folder and all of its subdirectories as a whole for the correct drivers or you have to break it down as you have shown. I am also wondering once it gets to the, lets say nic folder, and you have 10 different ones in there, will it look through all of the folders for the correct one. I guess I am just unsure of the way the computer looks for the appropriate drivers during this process. I hope this made sense. Thanks!

You do need to set it out as AllKnowing1 suggested, Drivers work on the Device/Hardware IDs etc.. it looks through the driver inf files for values equal to the hardware then installs the appropriate one.  Each ID is different you can view these by opening Device Manager selecting a Device and going into Properties > Details Tab

Cheers

It works the same way as if you are automatically letting the system search for a driver. NO - you dont have to set it out as I SUGGESTED. However, it helps with organization. Of course, windows will choose certified drivers first. It works fairly well though.

Because jbyrd said he wanted to include drivers for all his platforms, it's very possible that two files may have the same name, this is especially true if you're aiming at different manufacturers systems for example HP, Dell, Toshiba, and although it is possible to combine the content of the infs, if all files held under the [sourcediskfiles] section within the inf are the same, it's not a given, so imo it's best to set it out the way you suggested.

Cheers
