The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Ghost 8.0 bootable CD unable to detect CD-ROM drive letter

Tags: Symantec, Norton Ghost, 8.0, Ghost 8.0 bootable CD unable to detect CD-ROM drive letter
Hi

I have a bootable Norton Ghost 8.0 CDROM which I have been using for years
to boot up from my Dell laptops' & HP Vectra desktop's  built-in (IDE) CDROM
drives successfully which would allow me to activate Ghost to take a backup.

When I do  'attrib/s *.*'  on the CDROM drive, the only file I can see is ghost.exe
(there's no config.sys nor autoexec.bat).

However, my Thinkpad X61 do not have a built-in (IDE) CD drive, so I connect
up an external USB CD drive to it, set the BIOS of the Thinkpad to boot from
the USB CD drive first.  However, after selecting option
  "1. Boot computer with support for CDROM"  at MS Win 98 menu,
it gave a few error messages below (& did not allow me to get to a
CD drive for me to invoke ghost.exe) :

No Drives found, aborting installation

Device drive not found
DetectCD was unable to determine the CD-ROM drive letter

& it went down to A: drive which contains several MSDOS
executables/binaries, eg:
  fdisk.exe, format.exe, doskey.exe, attrib.exe, chkdsk.exe,
  detree.exe, edit.com, mouse.com

I've tried to go to C or D drive (type  C: or D:) but it gave "Invalid drive
specification".  B drive contains the MSDOS same binaries/executables.
When I booted up my brother-in-law's Compaq desktop PC, we faced
the same problem too.

There's an autoexec.bat file in the A: or B: drive & its content follows :
@echo off
mouse.com
path=a:\;%CDROM%:\
cls
IF "%CONFIG%"=="NOCD" GOTO LQUIT
LH MSCDEX.EXE /D:cdrom001 /L:%CDROM%
set CDROM=FOO23
DETECTCD.EXE
IF "%CDROM%"=="FOO23" GOTO NOCDROM
%CDROM%
cls
IF "%config%"=="SUCD" GOTO LQUIT
ghost.bat
GOTO LQUIT
:NOCDROM
cls
echo.
echo DetectCD was unable to determine the CD-ROM drive letter.
echo.
:LQUIT
set CDROM=

The config.sys last few lines (can't catch a glimpse of initial few
lines as they scroll though very fast). Can anyone help?
