I thought this might be due to Volume Shadow Copy issue but it isn't. Nor is it a hardware (drive WD 500GB MyBook) issue as this passes the detailed diagnostic that I have run. I've also removed/re-installed ghost but still no joy.

Unfortunately the problem still exists even with the external drive plugged into an alternative port. This is the event log text:
Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Drive Backup of Windows (C:\). Error E7D1001F: Unable to write to file. Error EBAB03F1: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I have tried a different backup device and reformatting the hard drive. I've tried a re-install of Ghost. Searching the net it seems this is a common problem but no one has found a solution.
Have you purchased and installed a new PCI usb2 card yet and tried that?
Here's some examples:

>> I have tried a different backup device and reformatting the hard drive.
Open a command prompt
chkdsk x: /r (where x: is the drive letter of your usb2 hard drive. The /r switch will cause a full sector check of the usb2 hard drive.)
You also mentioned previously that you have two recently added PCI usb cards. To help diagnose, try unplugging all the other usb2 devices (except keyboard or mouse) to eliminate possibility that other usb2 traffic is interfering. Also try to have ONLY your usb2 hard drive connected to the one pci/usb2 card.
How old is your pc? Check to be certain you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard. Go to manufacturer's website and look up instructions.
Don't get discouraged. My suggestions and others aren't just random "try this" ramblings, but steps that I would go through myself to diagnose this problem. It's like going to a doctor with a "stomach ache". Could be anything from indigestion to cancer, so more than one test is necessary to find the cause and rule out others.

As a test, have you tried backing up your c: do another internal (or even the c drive)? If you have room, try that.

Also, have you tried disabling any antivisus or antiworm software? Norton antiworm detection can cause this error in a networked environment.

How old is the pc? It is quite possible you are getting i/o errors writing/reading over the usb2 bus path. If you suspect this or if you pc is an older one, get a inexpensive pci usb2 card, and install that on your pc, and connect the MyBook to the new port.
