Norton Ghost 2003 Hangs During Disk To Image

Using Ghost 2003 to ghost disk to image a RAID 5 to another disk.  Tried it twice.  Once it hung up nearly 25% then again nearly at 75%.  Hangs.  No errors.  No messages.  It just stops.  Why?  We've seen this on other machines as well, primarily Dell PowerEdge 2650 with PERC 3Di RAID controllers and a plugin SATA card.  We've also tried GHOSTING to an external WD My Book 2TB external drive with the same problem.  What causes this?
