Yesterday I replaced a VXA Exabyte backup tape drive with a Tandberg LTO2 tape drive. I did this for greater capacity and speed when creating backups.
I instaled the drive into our HP Proliant ML350 G3 server after removing the old drive. I used the same SCSI ID of 2 and plugged in power and SCSI cable.
All seemed good.
I booted the machine and the drive was recognised by windows.
I opened our backup software Veritas 9.1 no updates and it did not see the drive at all. I found a post on the Symantec website suggesting installing the latest update to the software called Service Pack 5. I installed this and rebooted and it not recognises the drive.
However, it will not create back ups. It aways sames there is a media error or sticks at loading media and then ejects the tape. I have two Imation tapes which are a match for the drive. They are brand new so I don't think it is the tapes.
I have ordered some tapes of a different make that should arrive later today just to rule out it being a problem with the media.
It won't let me run jobs such as erase or label tape. All jobs have similar results.
I then guessed it could be an issue with Backup Exec as it is an old version so I tried to use NT Backup.
I get errors saying the tape is not erased and can not be used and it ejects when I try to make a simple backup of 1 file.
When trying to erase the tape in NT BAckup it rewinds and seems to access the tape then when the job starts I get the following message error log:
Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: LTO Ultrium
Media name: "Media created 19/09/2007 at 09:46"
The device reported an error on a request to MS_UpdateNtmsOmidInfo.

There may be a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
An inconsistency was encountered on the media in LTO Ultrium. Do not append to this media.
The operation was ended.

Error: C: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.

I am trying to determine if this is a media or hardware setup error.
I have tried updating the drivers with the latest on the Veritas website but they will not install as it says it could not find better drivers than the ones installed, which were installed automatically by windows when it booted following the hardware installation.
I am guessing there is a problem somewhere because this is a new drive and our software and OS are older.
This still does not explain by NT Backup Fails.
I will update this thread when I get delivery of the new tapes but till then does anyone have any other steps I can try to get this working or have you seen this before, is it a dogey drive itself? Incompatible SCSI controller? etc?
Any help is appreciated.
