Symantec Backup Exec CPS for MS Exchange

If I want to use CPS to back up exchange server. do I need to have BE and CPS on the same box or they can be seperated? Also, when using CPS, does it mean I have to back up exchange in two steps: backup to disk first then backup to tape?

I've worked a lot with Backup Exec, but I don't recognize the "CPS" abbreviation you're using.  What are you referring to here?

no they don't have to be on the same box.  In fact, originally I did and had an issue and Symantec told me to put CPS on another server.

You have use a backup to disk folder on the same volume your backup exec is installed on (not cps) to do the exchange backup with cps.

the backup job will be managed through the cps console once it is setup in backup exec.
If CPS and BE are on separate box, how does BE server know the existence of CPS? How do I do a disk-to-folder CPS backup from BE server? Can you explain it in more detail? Also, I was told Backup Exec 11D will automatically do a brick-level backup on exchange. Is this true?
BUE 11D will, as versions before it do either a brick level mailbox - email backup or at complete information store level. You can choose which you want to run.

One is quicker, the other lets you restore individual emails. Although since puttting deleted email retention on to 1 month in Exchange I have not had any muppets asking me to restore an email they deleted.

CPS is a separate install from BUE and backs up Exchange directly to disk 24/7. You would then have to use BUE to backup that to tape. Like you say a 2 stage process.
OK
This is how it works
BE and CPS are two seperate application from Symantec whuch can work togther in conjunction with each other
You CAN have BE and CPS on the same server
You CAN have BE,CPS and EXCHANGE on the same server but then you will not be able to use CPS to backup Exchange data as CPS cannot protect the server that its installed on
so in short youu cannot have CPS and Exchange on the same server

Now in order to protect EXchange with CPS you will need BEWS also
you cannot protect Exchange with the CPS alone

You will need to install the CPA (with the EXCHANGE COMPONENT) and the RAWS (Remote agent for Windows Servers) on the EXCHANGE Server
then in BE create a FULL job of the Exchange IS with the option to CONTINUOSLY PROTECT TRANSACTION LOGS under the JOB PROPERTIES >MS EXCHANGE
That will automatically create a continuous job in the CPS server
The CPS server is the server where you have the destination
the source will be Exchange
Also CPS comes free with BE but you will need to purchase a CPA (agent) license for any server that you want to protect with CPS and a RAWS for any server that you want to protect with BEWS
FOr a better understanding refer to the following

"If CPS and BE are on separate box, how does BE server know the existence of CPS?"

It knows, probably b/c of the remote agent.  Believe me I've got cps and BE on diff servers currently.  I don't do the exchange CPS backup b/c i had alot of trouble getting it to run.

"How do I do a disk-to-folder CPS backup from BE server?"

In BE, you have to create a backup to disk folder on a local ntfs volume.  Then create a new job, select the ms exchange information store.  Then in the job, click Microsoft Exchange and then put a check in "continually backup up logs using cps"

No, exchange will not automatically do a brick level backup.  you have to check the box, enable restore of individual folders in the exchange backup job

Thanks for the detail instruction. One last question, do i still need to create a job in BE that will back exchange IS to tape that does not use CPS? Or should I just backup the CPS disk folder? I guess my point is we do not want to leave the backup on a disk folder. Instead we want to be able to take it offsite and still do the rotation.

wow,

does that mean we have to do:

1. Monthly full backup using NTBACKUP utility
2. Daily BE 12 Exchange backup ?
