I did method 2, same result. My client is using  SBS  running SP2. I think I may have a bad DLL, of maybe the VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS show NO writers attached, nothing nul output. I really don't want to reinstall VSS.  Having tried all the Hotfix's and various KB's  related to my problem I'm lost on were to go now. Your help greatly appreciated, thank you.

you problem is with the shadow copy

in order to test if i am right or wrong

disable shadow copy on all the drives

run a backup an check the results just as a test if they are successfully

then you need to go trough all this

net stop vss

Then register the following DLLs and services (be sure you're in
the WINDOWS\system32 directory at your command prompt):

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll
Start the Volume Shadow Copy service by running "net start vss"
reboot the server

by: Monte515Posted on 2007-11-10 at 18:44:11ID: 20257938

Solved the problem. I originally registered the dll's using a bat file, then didn't restart the server immediately.
'Copy o my BAT.'
Net stop vss
Net stop swprv
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll
---------------------------------------
Ran these same commands from the keyboard, received the same dll registed reponse as from the bat. This time I immediately restarted the sever. After the reboot  VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS worked and the backup started.  Why the BAT file failed I have no idea.

I have the same problem and i followed the procedures above but it didn't work for me. I am running windows server 2003 R2 SP2. The server is use as an Intranet server with sharepoint 3 and IIS installed. The intranet crashed and while we were recovering the system back to its normal state, we did some changes on the metabase file. Some stuff we saw online that was going to fix the problem we were facing, unfortunately it never did.
Do you know why our NT backup is always failing even though we did the above steps??

Ask for the Hotfix again. The original Hotfix didn't always work, the new one does.
