The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Western Digital exterior hard drive slow backup speed

Tags: Western Digital, MyBook Terabyte exterior hard drive, WD10000F037
I just bought a Western Digital terabyte MyBook external hard drive to back up the drives on my laptop and office. Neither computer has firewire, so I have to use USB. I'm trying to back up my Toshiba Satellite P200 laptop's C drive using GoodSync on Vista Home Premium. The C drive is 160 gb with about 100 used. So far the backup's been running for over 24 hours, and it's still got the Users and Windows folders to go. GoodSync is showing the transfer speed at 164 kb/s. Is this normal for an initial backup of this size? If not, is it a function of the computer, the drive, or the software?

well if its usb1.1 it may be right. still a bit slow though

in my icybox i get 20megbyte\sec using usb 2

have a check to make sure u are using a usb2 port and have usb 2 drivers installed for the mother board

try making a simple small copy to check if it is from the program or teh hardware.

USB signalling
USB supports three data rates:

A Low Speed (1.1, 2.0) rate of 1.5 Mbit/s (187 kB/s) that is mostly used for Human Interface Devices (HID) such as keyboards, mice, and joysticks.
A Full Speed (1.1, 2.0) rate of 12 Mbit/s (1.5 MB/s). Full Speed was the fastest rate before the USB 2.0 specification and many devices fall back to Full Speed. Full Speed devices divide the USB bandwidth between them in a first-come first-served basis and it is not uncommon to run out of bandwidth with several isochronous devices. All USB Hubs support Full Speed.
A Hi-Speed (2.0) rate of 480 Mbit/s (60 MB/s).

so if you device is running at the 1.5Mbit/s that might well be a problem.. as then you would expect that speed you are getting..

some motehr board do need the correct drivers to enable usb2 to run so check that... If you Laptob cant support usb2 than you back ups re going to be very very slow..

and yep try a copy of a single file about 15meg in size. this should give you a good indication of the interface throughput.

Thanks for the help and quick response. Bear with me here, because I'm not real savvy. It's a relatively new laptop, so I'm pretty sure it supports USB 2. There are 6 USB ports on the laptop. I've got a wireless mouse and printer plugged into 2 of them, and the exterior hard drive plugged into another. I'm looking at the Device Manager, and it shows 5 Intel ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controllers (numbered 2830, 2831, 2832, 2834, and 2835) and two Intel ICH8 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controllers (numbered 2836 and 283A). When I click on the properties for each one and look under the advanced tab for bandwith consuming devices, I see only "system reserved" for 2830, 2831, and 2835 , a "USB composite device" using 3% for 2832, a "TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor" using 1% for 2834 (I assume this is for the fingerprint reader that came with the laptop), and a "USB composite device" using 1% for 2836 and 283A.
I assume one of these "composite devices" is the hard drive. Am I to assume that some of these USB ports are USB1 and some are USB2, and that it's a question of connecting the hard drive to the correct port? If so, how would I determine which port is which?

you getting too deep into ports .. have you tried making a simple copy ?

01.20.2008 at 08:33PM PST, ID: 20703906
I will as soon as this backup is done, but after having it run for about 36 hours now, I'm too far in to abandon it now. I might as well let it complete. I'm thinking that making a copy to the same disk that's simultaneously working on the 100 gb backup won't tell me anything... if the copy is slow too, how will I know if it's a function of the western digital drive, the laptop, or the simultaneous operations? So I'll try it after I bite the bullet and let this backup complete... even if it takes the next two days.

heheh.

that is just trouble. although i am not sure , but i think if you quit the back and worked on solution to make the transfer faster then made the back then probably it will take less time than waiting the bckup to finish that way.

any solution wont be good as long as you wont do anything until this backup is finished.

anyway , we can grab some info and try some checks untl it is done. although i would recommend quiting and finsing a solution. not for the next times , but for this time too.

if you would send the exact model of the hdd or maybe a url (link) on its site showing the hdd. also, to clarify the usb, firewaire ....... (physical) connection.

what simultane operations are you talking about ?

01.21.2008 at 01:13AM PST, ID: 20704688
I still think that as the copy is running at 164kb/sec and the native usb 1.1 speed is 187KB/sec. that this could well be the probelm.

Go to the home page on the toshibia site. and look for the mother board drivers and make sure they are updated. reboot and see if it works better.

I am sure you are running at USB 1.1 speeds. also make sure that there are not anyt firmwear updates for the hard drive enclouser that have any thing to do with the USB speed.

The backup finally finished this morning. I did try just copying a 30mb file to the hard drive, and it was accomplished pretty quick. And I checked the specs at Toshiba, and the USB ports are ALL 2.0. Sorry, but I'm too much of a novice to even know how to get to the bios, and Toshiba's support site (and WINDOWS help) were no help. So it appears there's a limitation with this drive (a Western Digital 1terabyte MyBook) and its USB connectivity; OR with GoodSync, which is set to make copies of the files before transferring them to the target drive.
But I did discover that my laptop DOES have a firewire port (I didn't know there were two possible sizes of ports). Western Digital only supplies the firewire cable with 6 pin connections on both ends, so I got a 4 pin/6 pin cable today and I think that speeds things up considerably. I did a follow-up sync of the C drive backup today and it was accomplished in about 5 minutes, and other tests have gone well enough to suit me.
So thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. I'm giving the points to Devilwah, because his info gave me the best understanding and let me know what to watch for.

then there was somthing with the backup app and not with the transfer speed as i guessed before :) .. pppp points

01.22.2008 at 01:30AM PST, ID: 20712874
hold on smart...

he said he changed it to fire wall and it went much faster....

so that suggests it was to do with the USB port..
