Need advice on how to properly configure backup

Since my last question is not garnering any attention, I figured I would ask a different one in the hopes that it spurs some insight.  Here is my environment:

1. I have a Windows 2003 R2 fully patched server, dedicated to running CA Brightstor Archserve SP3.  
2. I am backing up 5 Windows servers that are all on the same subnet (connected to the same switch), connected via 1 Gbps NICs and have the Windows Brightstor agent installed(sp3 applied).
3. I have configured a disk staging job (using the free 2 subjobs allowed with a standard license) to backup the job to disk (2 gbps fiber dedicated SAN) and then it migrates to a tape after the job is finished (also 2 Gbps fiber).
4. The disk staging group is configured to use a 64 chunk size, as that seems to have yielded the best results for the various servers I am backing up.
5. Server is an IBM x345, dual CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and IBM DS400 fiber attached storage(RAID 0 volume with 7 physical drives).

To get the most out of my backups performance, should I break up my job into two seperate jobs, each writing to a seperate RAID 0 volume?  Then have one job migrate its data to tape, and then migrate the second job to the same tape with an append write.  Is this a better method rather than backing up all the servers?  Is there a way to restore a subset of the data from tape directly, rather than have to restore the entire data set first to disk, then perform the restore?

Hi,

with regards to the restore part when you have data going to a FSD, the normal way the restore works is that it would try to pick up the data from the FSD and then look for the tape. i.e. "restore maximization".

Coming to your actual query whether running two jobs to the raid volume, if the raid controller is one and the same for all the 7 disks then i would not suggest going ahead with that kind of plan as the throughput will be dependent on the raid controllers ability to handle the data.

You can always achieve better throughput when the FSD is on a IDE or SATA disk as the data is written to it randomly while in case of scsi disks it is written sequentially.

To summarise :

1) if you have two raid controllers then you can go ahead with the plan of running two jobs splitting the no. of servers backed up in each job.
2) Restores for Backups run to FSD and the migrated to tape will always try to restore the data from the FSD first then go to the TAPE. So, even if your data is on tape there is no need for you to restore the data to disk.
