The problem just vanished for reasons unknown. I had tried to do what you suggested but this did not generate any light. In the end I got rid of a lot of suspicious stuff, especially from Norton...
Thanks anyway

Browse All TopicsCarbonite workd very well until a couple of weeks ago. Then, for no reason that I can recall, apart from re-installing it a couple of weeks previously, it started to eat my CPU alive when doing the actual backup. I have been in touch with Carbonte and they suggested turning off other various program, and this did not solve th problem. I first checked for and repaired any bad blocks on my C: drive. I then turned off Cobian, Iomega Activity Disk, Norton Ghost, Norton Speed Disk, to no avail. Latest suggestion is to turn off the permanently running bit of PowerArchiver, which I do not know how to do.
Any thoughts out there on the problem and/or turning off PowerArchiver?
many thanks.

For what it's worth I had this same problem on a WinXP Pro computer. It appears a program installed something called GEAR Security (or GEAR software) which runs as a service. I ran msconfig.exe and clicked the Services tab and unchecked the GEAR Security entry, clicked OK, rebooted and everything went back to normal.

You might try lowering the priority. Go into task manager and in the processes tab right click the process and then Set Priority.
