Can we use ARCSERVE (Ver 12 R5454) Alert Manager if MS Exchange is not being used

I'm doing work at a client site. They are using SBS 2003 r2, but are not using the MS Exchange component (MSExch is not configured on this server).

We are using ArcServe for Win 2003 SBS, ver 12.0 build 5454.

I want to set up alerts using smtp only. I click on through "OK" on the dialogue box that asks for a valid MSExch mailbox (even though I have left the fields re: MS Excgange mailbox blank), and there are no complaints from ArcServe Alerts when I close this. But once I set up the smtp settings, I do not have the options for starting the ArcServe Alert service.

Is there any way to configure ArcServe Alerts if the client is not running MSExch at this site?

If not, that strikes me as quite presumptuous on the part of Arc Serve to assume that everyone is running an MSExch PO.
