Question

Can't access files on WD hard drive created by Sync program

Asked by: GuruGary

We have a customer who bought a Western Digital external USB hard drive.  They "backed up" their files regularly using the built in "Sync" software than came installed on the WD Passport drive. A few days ago the hard drive in the computer crashed and now the user wants to get his data off the external drive that he has been backing up all this time.

All they really care about is the "My Documents" directory.  They set it up to sync the "My Documents" a long time ago and it must have asked for (and stored) a password, because it is now requiring a password to restore the files.  He gave us all passwords he has ever used, but none of them are working.  From our research the files appear to be encrypted with dmailer or DmailerSync software. We called Western Digital and their only answer is "you shouldn't use the sync software as a backup, so we can't help you".

Is there a way to decrypt these files?  Or reset the password?  Or recover the password?

Password protection means that files are defended against attempts, such as: decryption, reset password and recover password, especially when these actions are not authorized.
You have two ways:
a)Ask the customer to refresh his mind and recollect more passwords (often used passes are 12345 etc or his\her\relatives birthday dates).
b)Give up and reformat the drive

Not sure if this will work but its worth a try.. I cant test

If the encryption is at the OS level maybe a different OS may help..

Download Knoppix from here burn image on to a CD
http://archive.cs.stedwards.edu/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso

Once that is done then boot your computer with that CD(Make sure your flash is inserted when you boot the computer)
Linux need to mount the drive..

Once your in then you should be able to browse thru your Hard drive (That's what I think) is you can do that then you can just copy and paste to your hard drive

all of the hard drive will appear on the Desktop.. So choose the Flash drive and copy to a hard drive...

I am hoping that the security software was made for windows and wont run if you use linux..
