Question

The device, \Device\Scsi\mraid35x1, did not respond within the timeout period

Asked by: tlday

I am getting this error in event viewer only when trying to run a backup to USB drives.
This happens when using Backup Exec or the Windows Backup utility.
The error will appear 4 times in the system log and the server will reboot.

I also get a blue screen on the server with the following message.
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen event 9, and 15 errors pretty regularly.  In nearly all cases, it has been a problem with a drive attached to that controller.  Could be the adapter,  but its more likely a drive.  Replacing the drive in question has done the trick for me.

Ive referred to MS article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q154690/ for my own troubleshooting.

I looked at this article last night. It just seems odd that it only happens when backing up to a USB hard drive. Could it possibly be faulty RAM?

Well,  when you back up your drive you are doing some pretty constant reading from the source drive.  Do you do anything else with that server that's hitting the drives that hard?  I suppose anything is possible,  you could download the memtest boot disk (google) and hammer at your memory for a few cycles, see if anything pops up.

My first thought is still my gut feeling however.

This server is running SQL Server 2000, and IIS. It is also running Bartender label software.
I tried using Acronis True Image to image the server to a folder on the C partition to see if it would work. It did not lock up. It just ran very slowly  (5 hours) so I cancelled the job.

Still sounds to me like a failing drive.  Id get a good clean backup either way, to be safe!

Now I am getting these errors. Odd thing is we ran a backup yesterday morning with no errors at all. Then last night this happened and the server blue screened and restarted. I am using ESATA now instead of USB.

2 Days ago we installed a SATA card and are now using esata to do the backups with.
There was a service called Telephony in BackUp Exec that would cause the server to crash when started. The Telephony service would not start when you did a run now in Backup Exec only when the scheduled bakup ran that night. It has been 2 days now with no crashes. Hopefully this has it resolved.
