Cheers Igor, my apologies I neglected to mention I was running XP Professional and backing up to an external USB hard drive. I think I shall try Robocopy tonight and let you know how I get on.

Browse All TopicsHello, I'm looking for some backup software, currently I use Microsoft SyncToy. I've had some issues with SyncToy, the backup fails and the message states that some of the filenames are too long... doesn't tell me which files either! I need some FREE software that will allow me to backup only the files that have changed since the previous backup, and doesn't store all the data in one file, it must keep the same directory structure. Any ideas? Many thanks in advance :]

Microsoft provides a couple of very power tools for making backups:
NTBACKUP - a full blown backup / restore tool for backing up to disk and tapes (http://en.wikipedia.org/w
It is a part of Windows NT / Win2K and XP. On Vista and Windows Server 2008 it is not a part of OS but available as a separate download: http://www.microsoft.com/d
Another tool is ROBOCOPY (Robust File Copy Utility). For Windows NT / Win2K and XP and it is available as a part of WIndows Resource Kit: http://www.microsoft.com/d
Contrary to NTBACKUP for Vista and Windows Server 2008 it is now included to OS (http://en.wikipedia.org/w
Hope it helps
