VMware Backup Recommendations

We have VMware hosts (vSphere 4 Enterprise) connected to our SAN (FC).  Although we've been using VMware for nearly 3 years, we have not implemented a true backup solution for virtual guests.  We use Backup Exec (currently 11d, licensed for 12.5) for windows backup purposes.

What options do we have, and where can I get some step-by-step setup instructions?  Obviously I don't want to spend a load of money to do this, so cheap recommendations are good...  We do not have native SAN replication options, and most of our backups will be written to tape, although disk-to-disk-to-tape is possible.

Without SAN replication, you probably have to shut your guests one by one and backup the files?
Alternatively, certainly there are VMWare tools in the Enterprise edition that allow live backup?

If your SAN supports snapshots, you will want to snapshot the lun and then back that up.  That is the best way, IMO.

You can always just run Backup Exec client inside the guest OS and back it up that way, too.  That may be the easiest for you.

There are a few options:

Backup Exec VMware ESX Agent - available only for 12.5, price per host.  Requires VCB and provide fairly easy way to backup

Vizioncore vRanger - Doesn't need VCB, will backup the VM and let you do file level or VM level restores, priced per CPU.  Will do full/diff/incremental

PHD esXpress - Runs as virtual appliance, will do full and also has dedupe capability, priced per host.

And as always you can use agent based BE backups but restores are somewhat more time consuming (think reloading OS, agent, etc...)
