DPM Agent Error 270

I am trying to work with Microsoft DPM.  I tried to install the agent from the server console with no luck.  I tried a manual install, and the steps to the installation went fine.  I ran the setdpmserver utility with a 'success' message ... ran the attach-productionserver utility on the dpm server.  I can go to the agent machine and ping the dpm server with both an fqdn and ip address.  The agent machine is now showing up in the console in a section called 'unprotected computers with protection agent', and the status is 'error' with error number 270.  Has anyone come across this?  No solutions posted online have seemed to work for me so far.
