Question

Eject Dell RD1000 Cartridge Post Backup

Asked by: aherskowitz

I'm using Retrospect Server 7.5 with a Dell RD1000 on a Dell PowerEdge server running Windows Server 2003 Standard and need help figuring out how to eject the RD1000 cartridge after a backup job completes.  Retrospect is not ejecting it on its own despite the "eject tapes and discs when script is complete" option is checked.

The RD1000 shows up as a removable drive in Windows Explorer and right-clicking on the drive does show an "Eject" option which does correctly eject the drive.

Retrospect has the capability to run a batch file after completion of a backup script, and since the Windows Explorer "eject" command works, I assume there is a command line way to execute the "eject" command.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You can probably use RSM.EXE with the EJECT switch.  See this article and search on "rsm eject" for an example of the syntax:

Retrospect has an option to eject media after backup.

1. In Retrospect, in left-hand pane go to Automate->Manage Scripts
2. Double-click your script
3. Click Options button
4. On the Options screen, click More Choices button if visible
5. Go to Execution->Media
6. Tick "Eject tapes and disks when script is complete"

The reference to the removable storage manager was what I needed.  Here is what I ended up doing:

I created a batch file called "RetroEventHandler.bat" (see attached code) and put it in c:\Program Files\Retrospect\Retrospect 7.5\External Scripts".  This is the standard location documented in the Retrospect docs.

The command to run in the script is:

rsm.exe eject /lf"DELL RD1000 USB Device" /astart

Where the "DELL RD1000 USB Device" device name was found by running "rsm.exe view /tphysical_media" as each device can have a different name.

Correction on the command to get the device name of the unit in question.  Instead of "rsm.exe view /tphysical_media" you should run "rsm.exe view /tlibrary"
