I need some files inside backup tape that i want to retrieve. these tapes are from the previous install of retrospect(same version) on the same machine. Is it possible to read the backup tape on the new install of retrospect? if so, how? thanks.

Retrospect will typically do a read only to backups done with the previous version, so ver 6 will read ver 5. You will need to load the catalog file that the previous version made of the tape you are trying to read. If you don't have the catalog file, you will need to let retrospect recreate the catalog by reading all of the data on the tape.
