Network backbone redesigned

Tags: network backbone redesigned Powerconnect 3524 and a Powerconnect 5424 Cisco dell

I currently am managing a network with ~100 client computers and 7 servers. We currently have
3 24port Cisco 2950,  (server room)
2 24 port Dell 2324, (1 in server room, 1 in wiring closet)
1 SMC 24port switch (wiring closet)
1 16 port netgear switch (wiring closet)

I want to look into totally designing the network and implementing a gigbit backbone for all the switches and server and also try to eliminate any single points of failure

I was thinking of getting 6 Powerconnect 3524 and a Powerconnect 5424. for the back bone. wit truncking to each 3524, But then if the 5424 dies the whole networks goes with it.

I was wondering what you guys thought. Im figuring I could get ~$3000 budget to do this but less would be better. I dont want to go over kill but I would like better network management and performance.

Btw the main server room has ~75 of the cabling going to it and houses most of the networking equipment except for 1 of the dell switches, the smc and netgear switches.
