The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

rebuild computer with New OS
Hi, My husband's PC is running win2K, and it's gotten sluggish, and also I can't install Norton 2008 on it because that requires Windows XP or higher. So I think it's time to rebuild it and install Windows Xp. It has been quite a while since I did this, so I have a feeling I'm gonna need some help. I don't have Norton Ghost.

Does someone out there want to give me their complete list of instructions? I will give points for instructions, then open new questions as I run into problems. Because I have no doubt that I'll run into problems. :)

Thanks in advance. If it helps, I do have a 500GB external hard drive connected to the PC, and a separate laptop for downloads. I am saying I'm intermediate in knowledge, but as I said it's been a long time.

Thanks- do you have any good instructions for backing up my system before I format?

I believe I should back up all files including IE favorites, email files, etc. Any tips?

Backup favorite (assume you use IE6):
You can backup your links by opening up the Favorites folder in c:\Documents and Settings\Username\Favorites and copying the links to a floppy disk or some other media.

To do this, navigate to the following folder: c:/Documents and Settings/username/Favorites. Here you will see all your links. There may be other folders or links to folders that have nothing to do with the Internet such as My Documents. Highlight all the links you want to back up by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the links you want to back up. Then right click on any of the highlighted links and choose Copy. Double click on the My Computer icon. Right click on the device you want to backup your links to, for example the floppy drive, then click Paste. That will backup your selected favorites to the floppy disk.

Backup Email (assume you use outlook 2000):
Outlook data is usually stored at the following paths:

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
C:\Windows\

Outlook data is usually comprised of the following items:

Personal Folders (.pst) files. The most important Outlook files. Your personal folders .pst file contains all of your local Outlook folders, such as Calendar, Inbox, Tasks, Sent Items, Outbox, Deleted Items, and user-created folders. When running, Outlook usually keeps its .pst folders partially locked, so it is recommended to close Outlook prior to making a backup.
Use PicoBackup that can download here:
http://www.picobackup.com/plugins/microsoft-outlook-express-backup.html

For data, I suggest you should have to copy to CD/DVD or external drive.

hey Mel, if you want to install XP, did you check if the hardware meets the minimum norm at least?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865
i would suggest NOT to try it if you don't have :
a cpu of 500 MHz or higher
256 Mb Ram (512 Mb is best)
a disk of 40 Gb

Hi- Just an FYI, if you go to the Windows upgrade advisor, Microsoft automatically takes you to Vista, and won't tell you anything about Windows XP. Of course.

05.06.2008 at 11:29PM PDT, ID: 21513569
mel,  it seems you don't understand - each motherboard has different drivers, that must be installed, so copying them over just won't work for different mobo's.  punky's advice is good : look up what mobo you have, and look on the manuf's site to see what drivers are available.

05.07.2008 at 07:12AM PDT, ID: 21516542
Nope, what I meant was, I didn't have to download any drivers, everything worked once I upgraded the OS. So I assumed that the windows XP cd had all the drivers I needed. At any rate, everything works, but in retrospect I wish I'd bought Norton Ghost, because I did lose some files that I didn't copy over to my hard drive properly. Thanks for all your help!
