How do I replace drives in Raid 1 array with larger or faster drives?
I have a Dell SC1420 server with 2 - 80 gig sata 1.5 drives 7200 RPM with a Dell CERC SATA 1.5/6 ch controller. The operating system is SBS 2003 SP1. I would like to replace the drives and I have a couple questions.
Can I use SATA 3.0 drives on this controller?
Is there any problems with replacing a drive with a larger and/or faster drive and letting it rebuild then changing the other?
My existing setup (preinstalled by Dell) has a small 12 gb C partion that is low on space, any recommendations on increasing size of the partions after new larger drives installed?
I just had an alert on the RAID Starage Manager app on the server that one drive was degraded, was able to rebuild the array but would like to change drives ASAP.

no use in changing 3.0g drives as the controller will still detect only 1.5. may be you can look at upgrading sas controller & sas/sata 3.0 hdd if dell is ok with the config
for expanding c drive, you can use ssoftwares like partition magic

Correction, Acronis disk tools can expand the C volume, not array, mistyped.
Sorry that I did not respond earlier to your comments. I like the comment by leew to use as disaster recovery exercise and his link to more info. cocacolanut's comment about Acronis and the info on raid controller cards was also very appreciated.

Small Business Server (SBS) is a line of server operating systems targeted at small businesses by bundling the operating system with a number of other Microsoft products that would normally need to be purchased or licensed separately. The most notable inclusions are Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint and ISA/TMG (Microsoft's firewall and proxy server).
