USB Hard Drive not working

hi. Im tried to install linux centos4 onto a usb hard drive. part way through the install it poped up with a 'serious error' and rebooted. Now that hard drive is no longer detected during install.

If i boot into windows and plug the hard drive in then it gets found by Plug n Play but no drive letter is assigned and the drive is not accessible.

My bios has the boot priority settings CD then HARD DRIVE but if the USB drive is plugged in at any point during the dvd installation of centos the entire process stops and locks up until the drive has been unplugged or switched off.

I have tried a live linux cd of gparted to try to reformat the drive but it is undetected.

The drive was bought yesterday brand new.

I want to get centos4 installed as the operating system on this dirve.
