USB HDD not recognised

Hi. I have a Buffalo USB Hard Disk Drive. It used to work perfectly, but suddenly it developed a problem. When I plug it into an XP machine, an error message comes up saying that the USB device was not recognised. I have tried it on different PCs (all running XP) and I always get the same error. However, every now and again I plug it in and out a few times and it suddenly works, but the next time it stops working again.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on with this?
