Question

How to format external harddrive so that ps3 can recognize the drive and so i can copy hd movies that are larger then 2gigs?

Asked by: snipa911

Hi there,

I just picked up a ps3 and am trying to get my hd movies that i downloaded to be recognized by the system.  I found out right away the ps3 doesn't recognize NTFS so after doing some reading up on the net i have to format the drive to fat32.  Now i spoke to someone at the store and they said you should format the drive using the standard mac format which will allow me to format the full 500 gig drive and allow me to copy say a movie file thats 8gigs.  My problem is the guy didn't know what program does this.  So my question is how do i format this external harddrive with my windows xp machine so that it can be recognized by my ps3 and so that i can copy a 8 gig file to the drive and my ps3 will recognize it?

An easy to use tool to format any drive connected to a Win box to HFS+ is MacDrive:

http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

Have not used it in a few years, but it was always simple and flawless in the past with all types of volumes: floppies to Zip disks to HDs.

Don't know of any other easy way to get a drive formatted HFS+ without using a Mac to do it, but Win boxes could not access it anyway.

Macdrive will do this but will format the whole drive HFS+ which may be an issue if you were intending to partition it

Some other options here:

You can also buy external drives that are already formatted for MacOS :)

Well Macdrive definitely works but does anyone know how to make a ps3 recognize an external harddrive with HFS+ format.  My problem is I am trying to get my PS3 to recognize an 8 gig HD rip movie mpeg file but the ps3 seems to only recognize a fat32 format.  Problem with Fat32 is the largest file it can handle is 4gigs which is no good to me because i have 8 gig files.  Compressing is not an option so i need to know if ps3 can handle any other formats for external harddrive like Apple HFS+.

You can use any osx86 boot disk to do this.

Click utility, Disk Manager.

select the usb drive, (currently ntfs) (not the partition itself) and then click partition.
Select 1 partition, or 2 partitions.

Once it's applied, formatted, just close disk manager and turn off the laptop/desktop

Macdrive is good for using the drive now in windows.

I heard from several trusted sources that the PS3 can read Linux EXT3 partitions, and they don't have the annoying 4gig limit that FAT32 drives have. I don't understand how no one suggested this yet, but try to format your HD in EXT3 using SwissKnife: http://www.compuapps.com/Download/swissknife/swissknife.htm
Its free.

I will be doing the same tonight, and will report on the results! I've been searching for solution for quite sometime now, I'm quite shocked that no one suggested this before!

FAT32 is an obsolete format and people shouldn't be using it for anything outside of formatting a flash drive, period!!
