Question

Bootable ISO Image On a USB Flash Drive

Asked by: Pretzel_Jesus

I am trying to take a bootable ISO CD Rom (for Windows based machines) I have and somehow put it onto a USB Flash Drive so I can boot from that instead of using the CD. I do understand the requirement of having a bios that supports booting from USB drives. Assuming I have met that requirement, how do I accomplish this?

Have a look on these instructions: http://www.liliputing.com/2008/04/install-windows-xp-on-mini-note-usb.html
Ignore the parts that refer to Windows installation and stop your eye on USB creating method.
This software also makes bootable USB flash drive in a good way: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/unetbootin/unetbootin-eeeubuntu-windows-276.exe?use_mirror=
It is for Linux but it works for Windows too.

This site lists a variety of methods to create a bootable pendrive:
http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

What's the bootable you want to install? Check their homepage; a lot of bootable disks come with USB installation instructions or even special tools for easy USB installation.
Here, for instance, is the way to create a pendrive with the "Ultimate Boot CD":

I do see a few websites explaining how to do this primarily for Windows OS installations. I have a very specific disk that installs a customized version of Windows XPe, as well as a bunch of other software and customizations. All I see to find are specific OS installation options.

They did but I am looking for a way to do any bootable ISO. My ISO is a bit too customized to do a plain Windows install. Im still trying methods from both of your links to see if I can make it work.

Is USB flash obligatory for you as OS install carrier?
Look this link as well: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=297 It helps to create bootable CD with Windows not USB. But you know now how to put ISO to USB.

If its a XPe, check out WinSetupFromUSB: http://www.msfn.org/board/install-USB-WinSetupF-t120444.html

It may work with your specific project - will not work for *any* Iso though.
