Question

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini Not Working

Asked by: JonMarkGo

I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 160GB which has been working for quite some time as a music storage drive. I connected it today and the little light goes on but my computer does not detect it. I tried connecting it to a different computer and the same thing happened. I then loaded up the SeaTools diagnostic utility from Maxtor and the drive is also not detected. Could anyone offer a suggestion as to how I can fix the drive with the least data loss possible?

Hi JonMarkGo,

The hard drive is probably fine. What has most likely failed is the circuit board in the enclosure...where the USB port is at.

<Could anyone offer a suggestion as to how I can fix the drive with the least data loss possible?>
you can try taking the drive out of it's enclosure and make sure that nothing has come loose inside of the enclosure...you can use something like the USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter...if you want to try to get your data off the hard drive...if you do take the hard drive out of it's enclosure...most likely you will void the warranty.

if you have the drive out of the enclosure, connect it directly to the ide/sata port of the pc.
this will show if the disk is ok, or not.
then you can test the drive; if it shows errors , post back for further help

I assume it is 2.5 drive and connecting it directly to computer (when taken out of enclosure) could be a problem.
Order another enclosure for your drive and set to it the drive from OTMini enclosure.

a 2.5 drive can easily be connected; the sata  is the same, and there are ide ada^ters available (around 6$ if i remember correct)

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-07-20 at 03:44:36ID: 24893790

It could be that OT4 comes with IDE drive inside of the enclosure.

see abiove noxcho : and there are ide adapters available (around 6$ if i remember correct)

Yep, thus he should first discover what drive is there inside of enclosure =)
Then decide what to buy.

So I opened up the drive and ended up buying a RocketFish SATA enclosure. I plugged it in and tested the eSATA and USB plugs and neither one works. SeaTools and Windows both still cannot detect the drive. It is also not making a continuous noise (the drive). It sounds like it is spinning, then stops and starts spinning again. Is there any way I can recover the data?

JonMarkGo - <SeaTools and Windows both still cannot detect the drive.>
Did you try putting the drive into another computer slave and tried to access your data that way...or is this what happens when you put the drive into the RocketFish SATA enclosure?

<It is also not making a continuous noise (the drive). It sounds like it is spinning, then stops and starts spinning again.>

It would be tricky to get any data off the drive if it stops ans starts spinning...if it does that most likely the drive is on it's way into the garbage. If you really need the data off of it you can send your drive to a professional. A good one is Ontrack Data Recovery.

I have not tried directly hooking it into a computer yet but I will soon. If that doesn't work, I may need professional recovery.

I connected it directly into my computer and used Ultimate Boot CD diagnostic tools and none of them could detect the drive. When I shake the drive it sounds like there are loose parts. I tapped the drive gently against the table to attempt to re-align, though it is still shaky. My next step (unless someone strongly recommends against it) is going to be to freeze the drive and then attempt to use it again. Failing that, I have ordered another hard drive of the exact same model to attempt a platter transplant.

by: JeremySBrownPosted on 2009-07-28 at 09:17:40ID: 24962247

JonMarkGo - Your best bet would be to order a new hard drive. Freezing the drive really won't do any good if you here a loose part.

<I have ordered another hard drive of the exact same model to attempt a platter transplant.>
Unless you know what your really doing, I wouldn't even try to go down this route. If you really need to get your data back, I would send the drive to a professional.

Freezing it for a couple hours did not help. I have already ordered the 2nd model of the same drive and will likely attempt to do a platter transplant myself unless I can find a company that can do it for me for semi-cheap.

Yeah, I did. I'd like to try to recover the data on my own despite the difficulty involved.
