Hi
.
From my experience, and I forget the technical explanation for this, when you change to ACHI you need to reinstall the OS.  It is something that needs to be selected when the OS is installed the first time.  In the future, always select ACHI when installing the OS.

I've run into this exact problem with a Dell XPS 420 system I wanted to use esata on.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Here is a link from a previous solution here at EE that explains ACHI:

Check it out.

If i reinstall the OS, does it ask for a sata driver on a disquette ? (i do not have one!)

by: nobusPosted on 2009-07-23 at 01:09:09ID: 24922719

yes, it asks for it, since XP does not have sata drivers
you can slipstream them into the XP cd, here a guide  :  http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Slipstream-your-XP-installation

What i expect from the eSata port is the 3Gps bandwidth in place of the actual USB2.0 port at 4Mbps.
Do you know a another way than ACHI ?

what do you mean with those figures?  can you post a link to info ?

About bandwidth  and eSata:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESATA#External_SATA
Section # 6.2 SATA in comparison to other buses

3,000 Mbps

by: nobusPosted on 2009-08-06 at 08:07:12ID: 25034290

that says 480 Mb/s, not 4
that's why i was confused...

I have install W2008R2 Standard edition with Sata bios set to ACHI. Everything go fine, eSata is now active.
But
1. Where i can find more information about the drivers included in W2K8 ?.
2. Do you know if XP or/and Vista OEM drivers are compatible with W2K8 ?

I will install W2007( RTM) on a second Dell 760 with eSata and ACHI
3. Where i can find more information about the drivers included in WSeven ?.
4. Do you know if XP or/and Vista OEM drivers are compatible with WSeven ?

Hey ..

Coming up with a complete driver list for any of the Microsoft OSes is a very difficult task.  For example, I found this list:

http://www.edbott.com/weblog/?page_id=1738

but notice the date on it.  You know there have been updates since then.  There are new drivers included in Windows Updates and all Service Packs.  It is really a moving target.

On the issue of compatibily, I've noticed most vendors include Server 2008 and Vista together.  But watch out when it comes to the different bit (x86, x64) OSes.

Another thng is sometimes you need to be careful with Windows drivers.  Who knows what version and chipset they are designed for.  Each vendor can have their own customiized version.  I've loaded Windows drivers and had things break and had to go back to the vendor for the right driver.

The bottom line is you need to look to the individual vendors for the driverrs.  And also the PC manufacturer.  Dell is usally the best source for Dell machine drivers.

There are probably going to be differences between each version of the OS.

Get the drivers from the manufacturer.

I have installed Windows 7 Pro edition with Sata bios set to ACHI. Everything go fine, eSata is now active.
But do you know a way to get a XP desktop like  (not with XP on Virtual PC)
Thank's for the useful edbott link.

Hi

It doesn't look like there is any way to change from the Windows 7 desktop.  The classic menu option is gone.

It probably won't be too long before someone figures out some way to customize it.  In the meantime, use it for what it is and have fun.

slipstream is not so easy and a simple link does not explains the all. You have to know carefully what all this inf items express in terms of your hardware.
All the "recommendations" where appropriates without a explicit, may be too long, solution.
Thank's for all
