With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Unable to properly format hard drive

Client's PC (Dell) Windows XP
Had crashed BSOD, Hive problem: "Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate"

Not uncommon, well-documented, various ways to try and fix it. However, unable to even run any commands from SRC. Disk was originally partitioned, removed hard drive & I was able to recover data from the hard drive, but only his 2nd partition. Primary partition not visible.

Client said OK to re-format and re-install Windows not worth trying to repair/fix it.

Here the heart of my problem. I did full Dell diagnostics on the hard drive, all fine, no apparent hardware problems.

I formatted the hard drive (via external drive caddy on another PC) using  Administrative Tools, Disk Management, all fine (done this twice and after deleting the partition), but when I try to re-install Windows XP from original Win CD, crashes with the original 'hive' BSOD. Even if I let the PC just try to bootup, the original BSOD appears.

So seems like the original Windows partition is still there!

How do I properly format this hard drive and remove the original stuff?
