Question

Periodic Boot Error with a HP Pavilion dv6885se Entertainment Notebook

Asked by: ohmyself

Ever since buying my HP Notebook, I have been plagued by a periodic boot error that occurs during the start or restart process.  It does not happen every time, but it happens frequently enough to be an irritation; maybe 1 out of 10-15 start-ups or restarts.  The process goes something like this:

1) Power on or restart the laptop from within Windows.
2) POST process finishes.
3) BEFORE the Windows Logo and Music a "progress bar" appears at the bottom of the screen.  Although progress bar shows left to right activity, the HDD drive activity light, in a very short time shows no activity at all.  Once the HDD light quits it does not matter how long I wait as the Windows Logo never appears, login music never plays and Windows does not start.

My work-around has been to do a hard-reset of the system (hold down power button) as Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work.  I then start the system using the power button.  When the error message appears "Windows did not start properly", I choose "start normally" instead of the repair option and the system boots normally EVERY TIME.  Go figure.  Please note that I have on two different occasions tried the "repair option" but the end result was a message stating that no fix was possible.

A secondary problem maybe be associated with the one above as it occurs periodically as well, but only during a cold boot and never at the same time.  After entering my password for the only user account on the system, I am informed during the boot process that a "new user profile" is being created.  After the new profile loads in windows, a "balloon" message informs me that my user profile "did not load properly" and that any changes to this temporary profile will be lost once the system is restarted.  The work-around I have been using is to restart the system and press F8 during the initial boot process and then choose "Load Last Known Good Configuration".  The system will then boot normally every time; not one failure.  Go figure again.

THINGS I HAVE DONE TO RESOLVE/ADDRESS THE ISSUES LISTED ABOVE. (no particular order)
1) I am a preventative maintenance advocate so I regularly, typically once a week, run software like CCleaner, Malwarebytes, ScanDefrag, Avast Home AV including periodic Boot level scans and even Spybot S&D
2) Reseated the memory several times (HP Support Site recommendation)
3) Replaced OEM Fujitsu HDD with larger/faster WD HDD
4) Ran SpinRite
5) Manufacture HDD Utility
6) BIOS Update
7) Windows Updates (excluding Windows Defender)
8) HP Bloatware disabled.

Disable all AV through msconfig.

You might want to turn off windows prefetch too.

by: chuckyhPosted on 2009-10-05 at 10:15:52ID: 25497219

Do you have an external usb drive or flash drive plugged into this laptop?

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-10-05 at 10:16:20ID: 25497223

I have had several AV's (Norton, AVG Free, Avast Home) since notebook's purchase.  I don't think that is the issue.  AV is not even running when error occurs.

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-10-05 at 10:18:14ID: 25497237

no external devices (usb or HDD) on a continuous basis that could be related.

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-10-05 at 10:21:16ID: 25497264

i think windows prefetch is disabled but i will check.

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-10-05 at 10:22:18ID: 25497275

please not that the problem has been with me from the beginning.  not a recent development.

prefetch is called Superfetch in Vista and it is turned off

Check the Event Viewer system log for any errors occuring at the time of the boot failure.

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-10-05 at 11:41:07ID: 25498192

The following error occured within 10 seconds under Event Viewer/Windows Logs/Application:

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Could this be related?

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-10-05 at 11:41:40ID: 25498201

oops.  within 10 seconds of startup

by: edbedbPosted on 2009-10-05 at 12:06:42ID: 25498456

I suppose it could but I would look for errors that occur when there is a boot failure.

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-10-05 at 21:35:24ID: 25501917

this event did occur when there was a boot failure.

Hi,  i believe you can have too many security monitors, and they all delete regestry keys, defend their territory against the other security devices. Using CCleaner is great but it may remove too much if not checked, and it keeps a record like a system restore, these temp files may cause other security softare to monitor old stores.
Do you have tea-timer installed with S&D Spybot. I'd uninstall S&D Spybot teatimer or disable it
 install  spybot without Teatimer.
teaTimer can terminate an application without asking you..
I have had  problems with Teatimer like lockups and shutdowns and nolonger use it.
I replaced it with spyware blaster
I have seen quite a few others experience shutdown issues using Tea Timer.
It tends to control the system and if it's running and the windows has a lockup causing a hard shutdown the hard drive is made inoperable is some circumstances.
What Is teatimer
http://www.spybotsd.info/en/faq/33.html
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=search&lang=en
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html
If the uninstall method is not suitable that is uninstall S&D and re-install without TeaTimer
I found this step by step
Stop using Teatimer by disabling it as follows:
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Resident.
Uncheck the following:
Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) Active.
Continue to use TeaTimer and answer TeaTimer's popup dialog  by pressing "A" on your keyboard for "Allow change" or "D" for "Deny change".
Note: The "Remember this decision" option is still visible and can still be used.
Additional notes about TeaTimer:
Note #1: If you cancel the dialog without answering either "Allow change" or "Deny change" the registry change will be denied (if that is an option).
Note #2:
When ActiveX Distribution Units and Browser Helper Objects are being deleted
(Change: Value deleted) there is no "Deny change" option.
I believe that this is because by the time TeaTimer recognizes that the registry change has occurred the underlying code for either the ActiveX process or BHO has been removed.
Therefore restoring the registry entry to its original value would not restore the functionality of what was deleted.

another simple idea ...
disable the windows start sounds and shutdown sounds I find these slows the startup and shutdown process, also if the mids become corrupted can cause hangs.
Hope it assists your problem.

Thanks for your response Merete:

I have never installed SB Teatimer due to the amount of control it wants and only run SB S&B as the need arises.  Also, I have use CCleaner for years on all types of hardware platforms without issue.  As to your disabling startup/shutdown sound suggestion, there is not a "improper shut" down message related to my problem as it occurs completely outside of the startup of the Window OS just after the BIOS POSTS.

by: MeretePosted on 2009-11-06 at 22:02:29ID: 25765164

Ok, sorry I have no other ideas then.
Periodic instances could be an indication of a pending problems not yet at fuitition and maybe based on the amount of usage at that time. Most difficult to pin down.
But i'd keep a check on everything when using the laptop on for long periods of time,
the  age of everything and make notes to see if you can pin it down.

The problem will sometimes occur when I transport my laptop from one location to another.  Probably 1 out of 15 to 20 times it will happen on a cold boot.  And what is further confusing is the fact that the problem seems to be so random.  There is no obvious pattern or source as you suggested with a shut down error or sound issues recommendations.  Further more, after it fails to boot, when prompted following a restart to let the issue be fixed or repaired, I can choose "Start Windows Normally" and the system continues with startup without issue or error messages every time.

Again thanks for your input.

I have experienced simlar with my  Acer laptop... reseating components and pulling out the battery seemed to solve it for a while, it was randome as well.
Oneday it refused to boot so what I did was create a new folder called windows2 in C drive
I installed windows to that  and booted into the windows2
I then went to the boot.ini  in the original windows and replaced it with a new boot.ini  while in the windows2 and it booted back into windows.
I left the windows2 folder in C drive and have not had any problems since then.
I now never remove the battery and let it run down a bit before charging it on AC.
The only thing I learnt from that was laptops are not as reliable as desktops.
no explainations to what caused it go figure.
that was 2 years ago  still runs fine these days.

Regards merete

Your suggestion Merete is a little over my head.  Let me get this straight.  You installed a second windows folder on to a non-bootable computer?  How did you do that if it refused to boot?

by: MeretePosted on 2009-11-11 at 23:49:12ID: 25802224

Sorry if it's a bit over your head, it was fluke how I fixed it.
I thought I had written it down.
So if memory servers me
I used my xpsp2 setup disc
set the bios to boot off it, you must have installed windows at some stage
I dont fully remember how I did it,  whether windows setup disc created the new Windows2 folder or I did in safemode.. but anyway
booted off the setup disc
then press any key to run setup then wait till it goes through loading the files then when you get to which windows select C drive it asked if I wanted to override the current OS i said NO and it installed to Windows2.
Then it rebooted into windows2.
I was then able to fix the boot.ini. Or at least replace it. rebooted .
I'm on my PC now but my laptyop is networked to here
I'll take a snapshot of my Docs and Setttings on the laptop it shows the windows2 folder as a User account.
As I said I left the Windows2 folder in C drive next to Windows default folder.
I have had no problems since.

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-12-06 at 15:06:43ID: 25985355

I am currently researching the suggestion by Merete:  Please do not remove my question.  It is not abandoned.  I had a family member who was ill but is much better now.  I am having one of my associates review Merete's suggestion as they are more knowledgeable than I.  Please be patient.

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-12-10 at 10:47:38ID: 26021311

After checking with my offline source I cannot accept Merete's last suggestion as Vista does not have a boot disk repair feature as in XP.

Dear rindi, please close this question as I am giving up.

by: ohmyselfPosted on 2009-12-27 at 08:24:39ID: 31637302

This would be a fix even in the "Vista" operating system as it is a full format of the operating system since there is no repair feature. This will be done on my machine. Thank you very much for all your time and comments. Have a wonderful holiday!
