"Fails on #4" isn't very helpful, but it doesn't matter. The drive's firmware detected it is in a degrading condition. Perform full backup now and replace disk. If there is any warranty then return it. A S.M.A.R.T. failure is a valid and accepted reason for a warranty replacement (for Seagate & Maxtor, at least, can't tell you for sure if it is grounds for all other manufacturers).

About all you can do is recover any data you need and then replace the drive. If you can boot for long enough to copy the data off, fine. If not, get a boot CD (Bart's PE is very good), boot from a CD and then copy the data you need off onto a USB key or similar. ... Thinkpads_User
