3 TB SATA hard drive show up as 750 GB hard drive on Dell Optiplex 980

3 TB SATA hard drive show up as 750 GB hard drive on  Dell OptiPlex 980.

Ever since I installed this new hard drive in the Dell OptiPlex 980, it has been recognized as only a 750 GB hard drive instead of its full 3 TB capacity.

I have looked in Disk Manager in the Computer Management utility and within the computer's BIOS and this hard drive is only recognized as 700 GB. There are no other unpartioned parts of the hard drive where the other 2.3 TB hard drive capacity is located.

This is a relatively new computer that has an Intel Core i5 processor. The operating system is Windows 7 64-bit and the computer has 4 GB of RAM.

Do I need to install a BIOS update for the computer to be able to recognize the full 3 TB size of the hard drive?

Or what else do I need to do to fix this issue?

Definitely look for an updated bios from dells support site. Is there any options in the bios as well pertaining to the hard drive that may be disabled?

leew,

I won't be seeing this computer until sometime next week.

Is there any way at all that such a conversion can be done so that the entire 3 TB of the hard disk will be recognized without losing any of the data in the process?

The 3TB SATA hard drive is the one and only hard drive in this computer.

Everyone,

Thank you for this very good information.
Hi
I have an Optiplex 780. I tried installing a WD3Tb Green today with windows Home Server 2011, which is a x64 application. The bios was v.08 and althought the HD was seen in the BIOS, the WHome Server only saw 764Gb.

I upgraded the BIOS to latest version 14. then I setup the drive to "Legacy" instead of the RAID options. Then W Home Server was able to see 2.7 Tb.

the reference provided earlier was very good
